EmotionTalk: An Interactive Chinese Multimodal Emotion Dataset With Rich Annotations

Paper · 2026 · Haoqin Sun, Jinghua Zhao, Xuechen Wang et al.

Summary

Chinese multimodal emotion recognition (MER) has far fewer resources than English. Existing Chinese corpora are mostly clipped from films and TV, so their quality is often low. They also tend to lack conversational structure or rich labels. Emotion captioning additionally relies on unreleased data, which makes results hard to compare.

The authors address this with EmotionTalk, a recorded Mandarin dyadic dialogue corpus with audio, video and text. Instead of reading fixed scripts, 19 professional actors improvised around themes such as friendship, family, workplace and doctor–patient encounters. The scenario outlines came from TV plots or LLMs and were checked manually. Annotators labeled each modality separately, assigning categorical labels, dimensional ratings and free-text descriptions of emotional speaking style.

Baseline experiments cover unimodal and multimodal recognition and captioning. They confirm that the data is learnable and that combining modalities helps. EmotionTalk is presented as the first large recorded interactive Chinese MER dataset with style captions. That makes it a standardized open benchmark for interpretable affective computing outside English.

Key points

  • Scale: 23.6 hours of two-person conversations containing 19,250 utterances from 19 actors. Each dialogue is capped at roughly two minutes so that no single emotion persists too long.
  • Labels:
    • 7 discrete categories: happiness, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger, fear, neutral.
    • 5 dimensional labels.
    • 4 caption types: Speaker, Style, Emotion, Overall.
    • Five annotators cross-validated the labels, working on one modality at a time without seeing the others.
  • Captioning baseline: A Qwen-2 decoder with a Hubert speech encoder reached SPIDEr 0.482 on style captions and 0.353 on emotion captions. BERTScore was high (0.988), while overlap metrics such as BLEU were much lower.
  • Context: EmotionTalk is compared against IEMOCAP, MELD, CMU-MOSEI, CH-SIMS, M3ED, MC-EIU_ch and others. It is the only corpus in the comparison that provides descriptive captions.
  • Release and limitations: The data is anonymized and released under CC BY-NC 4.0 for academic use only. The authors acknowledge that the small speaker pool may limit how well models generalize.
