CodeJudgeBench: Benchmarking LLM-as-a-Judge for Coding Tasks
Paper · 2026 · Hongchao Jiang, Yiming Chen, Yushi Cao et al.
Summary
LLMs increasingly act as evaluators that compare, rank, or score code, yet little is known about how reliable they are in this role. Earlier judge benchmarks include only small, fairly easy coding subsets and focus almost entirely on code generation. The authors built CodeJudgeBench, which contains 5,352 pairs of LLM-generated solutions to competitive programming problems. These pairs span three kinds of judging: writing programs from scratch, fixing buggy programs, and producing unit tests. They used the benchmark to evaluate 26 judges, including general-purpose, code-tuned, and reasoning models. Every judge scored noticeably lower on CodeJudgeBench than on prior benchmarks. Compact reasoning models such as Qwen3-8B beat dedicated non-reasoning judges with up to 70B parameters. Fine-tuned reasoning judges did no better than general reasoning models. Stress tests showed that superficial changes can flip a judge's verdict, including response order, misleading comments, variable renaming, and statement reordering. These findings matter for any pipeline that uses LLM judges to filter code or to produce training signals for code models.
Key points
- Benchmark design: CodeJudgeBench has three tasks (CodeGen, CodeRepair, TestGen) and uses pairwise comparison. Its 5,352 solution pairs were produced by frontier models such as Gemini-2.5-Pro.
- Models evaluated: 26 LLM-as-a-Judge models, including Qwen3, QwQ, RM-R1, Skywork-Critic-70B, Gemini-2.5-Pro/Flash, and Claude-3.7/4-Sonnet. Gemini-2.5-Pro achieved the highest accuracy, roughly 81–82%.
- Robustness tests: Perturbations covered response formatting and ordering, author attribution, version numbers, creation dates, comments, renaming, and reordering. Misleading comments, renaming, and reordering caused the largest accuracy drops. Prompt-based mitigation of comment bias helped only partially.
- Preprocessing effects: Average accuracy was 71.43% when judges saw the raw response, 70.31% with full code, and 69.27% with comments stripped.
- Error analysis: In hard CodeGen pairs, the wrong solution more often fails only on corner cases (25.4% of errors vs. 11.7% in easy pairs). Time-limit errors become less common as difficulty rises (40.5% → 22.2%).
