XY-Tokenizer: Mitigating the Semantic-Acoustic Conflict in Low-Bitrate Speech Codecs
Paper · 2026 · Yitian Gong, Luozhijie Jin, Kuangwei Chen et al.
Summary
Speech LLMs need discrete tokens that carry both linguistic content and acoustic detail. At low bitrates, codecs typically trade one for the other. This paper introduces XY-Tokenizer, a codec of roughly 1 kbps designed to reduce that tension.
The architecture uses two encoder towers, both initialized from Whisper:
- a frozen semantic branch,
- a trainable acoustic branch.
Their outputs are concatenated and fed into a residual vector quantizer, which is the only component the two pathways share. Training proceeds in two phases:
- Stage one jointly optimizes an LLM-based ASR loss (with a Qwen2.5 decoder) and mel-spectrogram reconstruction.
- Stage two freezes the encoders and quantizer, removes the text decoder, and refines only the waveform decoder with adversarial losses.
Training uses the Emilia corpus. In ASR probing, XY-Tokenizer shows clearly better text alignment than SpeechTokenizer, Mimi and XCodec 2.0 while keeping reconstruction quality high. It also performs better on downstream LLM speech understanding and generation tasks. The study suggests that explicit ASR supervision and limited parameter sharing are effective ways to build general-purpose speech tokens.
Key points
-
Training data: the full Emilia dataset, about 101k hours or around 37 million audio–transcript pairs, resampled to 16 kHz.
-
Post-training setup: combines MPD, MSD and MS-STFT discriminators under an LSGAN objective, plus feature-matching and mel losses.
-
ASR probing WER:
Codec LibriSpeech VoxPopuli XY-Tokenizer 0.13 0.25 SpeechTokenizer 0.22 0.42 Mimi 0.28 0.41 XCodec 2.0 0.30 0.43 -
Gap to the pretrained encoder: on LibriSpeech, XY-Tokenizer's ΔWER is +0.06, compared with +0.16 to +0.24 for distillation-based codecs.
-
Encoder specialization:
Encoder Probing WER SIM PESQ Semantic 0.06 0.51 1.53 Acoustic 0.23 0.93 3.99 The semantic encoder aligns better with text, while the acoustic encoder reconstructs better. Ablations further show that both Whisper initialization and explicit ASR loss are needed.
