BLINK: Multimodal Large Language Models Can See but Not Perceive

Paper · 2024 · Xingyu Fu, Yushi Hu, Bangzheng Li et al.

Summary

Popular multimodal benchmarks such as MMBench mostly test object recognition and language-side knowledge. They say little about whether models actually perceive visual structure. The authors present Blink, a benchmark built from 14 classic computer vision problems, including relative depth, visual and semantic correspondence, multi-view reasoning, reflectance, forensics detection, jigsaw and IQ-style puzzles. Each problem is rewritten as a multiple-choice question, often with visual prompts like circles or boxes, using images drawn from existing datasets. The tasks were chosen so that a textual description of the image does not give away the answer.

The authors tested 17 multimodal LLMs. People solve almost all items quickly, but the strongest models score only modestly above chance. Task-specific vision models do far better than the general systems. The results suggest that earlier evaluations overstated the perceptual skills of multimodal LLMs. They also suggest that transferring knowledge from specialist models is one possible way to close the gap.

Key points

  • Blink contains 3,807 questions over about 7.3K images covering 14 tasks. Humans average 95.70%, GPT-4V gets 51.26% and Gemini 45.72%, which is only 13.17 and 7.63 points above random.
  • In a "Caption + LLM" test, images were swapped for dense GPT-4V captions and given to a text-only GPT-4. This setup beat GPT-4V on MMBench by 5.7% and reached 47.2% on MMMU, but stayed at chance level on Blink.
  • Specialist models (DIFT, DepthAnything, LoFTR, DIRE, Ordinal Shading) beat the best multimodal LLM by 18–57 points per task. They reach near-human scores on depth and visual correspondence.
  • Red circles worked better than gray ones as visual prompts. A 10px radius was best on average, though the ideal size varied by task.
  • An analysis of 140 GPT-4V mistakes found two main error types. Invented fine-grained details accounted for 24.2%, and misplaced visual-prompt locations accounted for 20.0%.
