Phoenix: Democratizing ChatGPT across Languages
Paper · 2023 · Zhihong Chen, Feng Jiang, Junying Chen et al.
Summary
Open ChatGPT-style assistants released in early 2023 were mostly built for English, or English plus Chinese. Speakers of other languages, especially those using non-Latin scripts, had few usable options. The authors present Phoenix, a 7B model post-trained from the multilingual BLOOMZ backbone. Its recipe combines two kinds of supervision that Alpaca and Vicuna had used separately: instruction data and user-shared ChatGPT conversations. Instructions were made multilingual in two ways. In one, the finished answer is translated, which preserves answer quality. In the other, the prompt is translated and then answered, which allows culture-specific responses. Evaluation uses 100 questions across ten categories, scored by GPT-4 and by human volunteers. Phoenix leads open-source Chinese models and clearly beats Guanaco in Arabic, Japanese and Korean. It trails English-focused models, a cost the authors call the "multilingual tax". A LLaMA-based variant, Chimera, avoids that tax for Latin-script languages. The work is an early, fully released multilingual assistant, with code, data and weights in LLMZoo. However, its evaluation is small and, by the authors' own admission, not rigorous. Ukrainian is not evaluated separately.
Key points
- Models: Phoenix uses BLOOMZ-7B. Chimera uses LLaMA 7B/13B. Table 1 lists about 267K instructions and 189K conversations covering 40+ languages, though the extracted table is garbled. Everything is released via GitHub (FreedomIntelligence/LLMZoo).
- Chinese results: GPT-4 rated Phoenix at 122.7% of BELLE-7B-2m, 135.3% of Chinese-Alpaca-7b and 125.2% of Chinese-Alpaca-13b. Human evaluation shows win margins above 50% over the open Chinese baselines.
- English results: Phoenix scores about 21% above Vicuna-7b and ChatGLM-6b but stays behind Vicuna-13b and ChatGPT. GPT-4 rated Chimera at 96.6% "ChatGPT Quality", which the authors claim as a new open-source SOTA.
- Ablation: Adding instruction data to conversation data improved results by 5.1% relative in Chinese and 6.3% in English, measured against GPT-3.5 Turbo.
- Limitations: Evaluation relies on only 100 questions and mostly on GPT-4 judging. Human checks covered Chinese only. The authors promise more rigorous evaluation later.
