Aya Model: An Instruction Finetuned Open-Access Multilingual Language Model

Written for the Research library (claude-opus-5-5) from the paper text. Original — arxiv.org/pdf/2402.07827

Summary

Most instruction-tuned LLMs serve a few data-rich languages, and English dominates popular instruction datasets. As a result, speakers of other languages get weaker and less safe technology. The Aya project addresses this by building an open multilingual model that accepts prompts directly in 101 languages, about half of them lower-resourced. The authors finetuned the 13B-parameter mT5 on a large mixture of instruction data with permissive licenses. The mixture combines:

  • templated academic datasets (xP3x, Data Provenance Collection, Aya Collection),
  • human-written examples from fluent speakers (Aya Dataset),
  • machine-translated and synthetic data (ShareGPT-Command).

They tested different weightings of these sources and pruned low-quality items. They also built a broad evaluation suite covering 99 languages, with discriminative and generative tasks, LLM-judged win rates, human ratings and safety tests. Aya beats mT0, BLOOMZ and mT0x on most tasks while covering about twice as many languages. A multilingual safety step sharply reduces harmful outputs. The model and the datasets are released openly, which gives a strong base for research on under-served languages such as Ukrainian.

Key points

  • The training mix has 203M examples, about 2.5× the size of xP3. English makes up 21.5% of it, compared with 39% in xP3. Of the 101 languages, 51 are lower-resourced according to Joshi et al. (2020).
  • Aya improves on mT0x by 13.1% (discriminative tasks) and 11.7% (generative tasks). In human evaluation across 7 languages, it wins about 75% of comparisons against mT0x.
  • Pruning based on human annotations removed 19.66% of English and 18.25% of multilingual instances.
  • Multilingual safety context distillation cut harmful responses to adversarial prompts by 78–89%, according to expert judges. Toxicity and bias were analyzed in 18 languages.
  • The model is released under Apache 2.0 at hf.co/CohereForAI/aya-101. It was built by over 3,000 collaborators from 110 countries.
