xCodeEval: A Large Scale Multilingual Multitask Benchmark for Code Understanding, Generation, Translation and Retrieval
Summary
Code-oriented LLMs are usually evaluated piecemeal: on one or two tasks, in a few languages such as Python or Java, on fragments like single functions, often without training data, and frequently by lexical overlap with a reference solution rather than by running the code. xCodeEval addresses these gaps with one execution-based benchmark built from about 25M submissions to roughly 7.5K codeforces.com problems. It defines seven tasks spanning code understanding, generation, translation and retrieval.
The authors also release ExecEval, a distributed engine that runs programs against hidden unit tests. To build balanced validation and test sets, they select splits using a geometric-mean score over per-tag ratios and a graph-theoretic circulation method with lower and upper bounds.
They tested ChatGPT zero-shot, StarEncoder for retrieval, and a fine-tuned Starcoderbase-3B against CodeLlama instruct models. Even a simple binary task, code compilation, remains hard for these models. The training data also lets smaller models stay competitive at producing executable code. The resource matters because it supports multilingual, execution-grounded comparison of code models.
Key points
- Scale: about 25M document-level examples (16.5B tokens) from 7,514 distinct problems, with difficulty ratings from 800 to 3500.
- Language coverage: classification and generation tasks span 11 programming languages, and retrieval tasks span 17. The paper's own text is inconsistent on this, giving 11 in the abstract and 17 in the introduction and data card.
- Execution and tests: ExecEval supports 44 compilers and interpreters. The benchmark supplies 62,798 unit tests, about 50 per problem on average.
- Leakage control: 1,354 problems are held out for validation and test, so models face unseen problems. Problems from CodeContests that lack complete test suites were excluded from the evaluation splits.
- Availability: the data is on Hugging Face (NTU-NLP-sg/xCodeEval) and the engine on GitHub (ntunlp/ExecEval). The license is CC BY-NC 4.0, and the data covers February 2010 to November 2022.
