OpenGenAlign: A Preference Dataset and Benchmark for Trustworthy Reward Modeling in Open-Ended, Long-Context Generation
Paper · 2026 · Hanning Zhang, Juntong Song, Juno Zhu et al.
Summary
Reward models are central to RLHF, but there has been no dedicated training data or benchmark for open-ended, long-context generation. In this setting, outputs lack a fixed ground truth, so verifiable or rule-based rewards cannot be used. OpenGenAlign addresses this with a preference resource built from three tasks: web-grounded QA (WebGLM), Data-to-Text over Yelp restaurant JSON, and BBC article summarization (XSum). For each prompt, two models drawn at random from a pool of 12 open and proprietary LLMs produce answers. OpenAI's o3 then judges each pair on four criteria, using majority voting over repeated comparisons. The resulting labels match human judgments 81% of the time. Existing reward models score poorly on the held-out benchmark, while a reward model trained on this data reaches about 86% accuracy. That model also improves policies trained with PPO, including on out-of-domain tasks. The data can be mixed with general preference sets without loss on those domains. This makes the resource practical for building trustworthy evaluators of long-form, grounded generation.
Key points
- Splits: 33K training preference pairs (11K each from WebGLM, Yelp, XSum), a 9K dev set for policy optimization, and a 1.5K held-out benchmark.
- Judging criteria: o3 rates response pairs on Hallucination, Comprehensiveness, Verbosity, and Attribution, with 81% agreement with human annotators.
- PPO results on HelloBench (GPT-5-mini judge):
- Llama-3.1-8B rises from 43.8 to 45.2 average, with summarization improving from 55.6 to 62.0.
- Llama-3.2-3B rises from 39.8 to 40.8 average.
- Chat is the only category where the base models sometimes come out ahead.
- MixReward: OpenGenAlign combined with 50K samples from Preference-700K scores about 1% higher on RewardBench than the baseline. It also reaches 86.0% on the OpenGenAlign test set.
- Limitations: Only three domains are covered, and data-mixing strategies have not been studied systematically. Code and data are on GitHub (hanningzhang/OpenGenAlign).
