HelpSteer: Multi-attribute Helpfulness Dataset for SteerLM
Paper · 2024 · Zhilin Wang, Yi Dong, Jiaqi Zeng et al.
Summary
Open helpfulness preference datasets usually give only an overall rating or a pairwise ranking. They do not say why one answer is better, so trained models can pick up shallow cues, such as preferring longer replies whether or not they are useful. The NVIDIA team built HelpSteer to address this. It is a human-labelled dataset in which each response receives separate scores for helpfulness, correctness, coherence, complexity and verbosity. The prompts deliberately cover task types that were weak or rare in Open Assistant, such as rewriting, summarization and extraction. The responses were produced by an in-house 43B model. Annotators rated every response independently instead of comparing it with alternatives, so labelling effort grows linearly with the number of responses. Training Llama 2 70B with the SteerLM technique on these attributes reaches 7.54 on MT Bench. This is the top result among open models that were trained without outputs from stronger proprietary systems like GPT-4. Ablations confirm that each attribute adds value. The resource is freely available under CC-BY-4.0.
Key points
- HelpSteer has 37,120 annotated samples built from 10,459 single-turn prompts, with four responses per prompt. About half of the prompts came from Scale AI and the rest were generated from templates. The data is split 95/5 into train and validation, with no prompt shared across the two parts.
- Each of the five attributes is scored on a 0–4 Likert scale by about 200 U.S.-based annotators recruited through Scale AI, followed by several rounds of quality review.
- SteerLM on Llama 2 70B with HelpSteer plus OASST attributes scores 7.54 on MT Bench, compared with 6.29 for plain SFT.
- In the ablations, dropping correctness lowers MT Bench to 6.92, and dropping all HelpSteer attributes lowers it to 6.9. Dropping the OASST attributes only lowers it to 7.36.
- Steering at inference time works for two attributes:
- Raising complexity increases the reading grade level (FKGL) from 8.489 to 9.104.
- Raising verbosity increases mean response length from about 422 to about 1125 characters.
