DialogStudio: Towards Richest and Most Diverse Unified Dataset Collection for Conversational AI

Paper · 2023 · Jianguo Zhang, Kun Qian, Zhiwei Liu et al.

Summary

Conversational models often struggle across varied dialogue tasks because training data is fragmented, small, task-specific and stored in inconsistent formats. Earlier collections either include few dialogue corpora (e.g., Flan), are closed (OPT's), or reduce dialogues to bare input–output pairs. DialogStudio, from Salesforce AI and Columbia University, gathers more than 80 public dialogue datasets into one shared JSON schema that keeps each corpus's original annotations. It covers open-domain, task-oriented, NLU, conversational recommendation, summarization and knowledge-grounded dialogue. The authors also record each dataset's license, label dialogue domains, and add external knowledge, dialogue-state schemas, intent information and domain-aware instruction prompts. They checked data quality with GPT-3.5-turbo ratings calibrated against expert judgments. T5/Flan-T5 models fine-tuned on the collection (770M–3B parameters) beat GODEL and Flan-T5 at zero-shot response generation. They also outperform much larger instruction-tuned models on unseen Super-NaturalInstructions tasks. The data, code and models are openly released and can be loaded through HuggingFace, giving the field a standardized basis for training and comparing dialogue systems.

Key points

  • The collection has 80+ datasets in six categories, all stored in a unified per-dialogue JSON record. Each record holds the ID, split, domain, task and turns, plus external knowledge, DST schema and intent knowledge. Five manually written prompt templates support instruction tuning.
  • In database-grounded dialogues, the correct database result is shuffled together with four random distractor candidates. Fewer than 0.5% of dialogues needed repair, either because utterances were empty or the dialogue was mislabeled as multi-turn.
  • For quality checks, GPT-3.5-turbo rated all training dialogues from 33 multi-turn datasets on six 1–5 criteria. These ratings were aligned with three experts' scores on 50 dialogues per dataset. Mean Overall was 4.14, and mean Relevance was 4.80.
  • On 48 unseen NIV2 tasks, DialogStudio-NIV2-T5-3B beat OPT-IML-175B by 5.9% in the 2-shot setting and Tk-INSTRUCT-11B by 4.3% in the 0-shot setting. Against Tk-INSTRUCT-3B, it gained 6.2% (0-shot) and 5.3% (2-shot).
  • On MMLU and BBH, scores dropped slightly compared with plain Flan-T5. LoRA-tuned LLaMA trained on DialogStudio subsets (e.g., ShareGPT, SODA) reached results comparable to Vicuna on AlpacaEval and MT-Bench.
