MultiWOZ - A Large-Scale Multi-Domain Wizard-of-Oz Dataset for Task-Oriented Dialogue Modelling
Paper · 2018 · Paweł Budzianowski, Tsung-Hsien Wen, Bo-Hsiang Tseng et al.
Summary
The development of task-oriented dialogue systems is hampered by the lack of large annotated corpora. Existing datasets are usually small, cover only a single domain, lack semantic annotation, or are linguistically homogeneous. Researchers from Cambridge collected MultiWOZ, a corpus of written human-human conversations gathered using the Wizard-of-Oz setup. One participant plays the user with a specified goal, while the other plays the system and has access to a database. The conversations concern information and tourist services: restaurants, hotels, attractions, taxis, trains, and so on. Most dialogues span at least two domains. Data collection and the annotation of belief states and system dialogue acts were carried out entirely through crowdsourcing on Amazon Mechanical Turk, without professional annotators. The corpus contains about 10k dialogues, making it at least an order of magnitude larger than previous structured datasets. The authors report baseline results for dialogue state tracking, response generation, and dialogue-act-to-text generation. Even when given the oracle dialogue state, the model performs noticeably worse than on the smaller Cam676. MultiWOZ has therefore become a challenging new benchmark for both modular and end-to-end approaches.
Key points
- Size: about 10k dialogues, of which the training set has 8,438 dialogues, 115,424 turns, and over 1.5 million tokens. This amounts to 24,071 unique tokens, 25 slots, and 4,510 values. For comparison, DSTC2, WOZ2.0, FRAMES, KVRET, and M2M contain between 600 and 2.4k dialogues.
- Ontology: 7 domains (restaurant, hotel, attraction, taxi, train, hospital, police). Slots are divided into informable and requestable, and there are separate acts for booking (offer booking, inform booked, etc.).
- Response generation (with oracle belief state): on MultiWOZ, the model achieves Inform ≈71%, Success ≈61%, and BLEU ≈0.19. On Cam676, the same metrics are ≈99%, ≈75%, and ≈0.20–0.22. The best variant for MultiWOZ was the one with an LSTM and global attention.
- NLG (SC-LSTM, restaurant subdomain only): SER 4.38% and BLEU 0.616, versus 0.46% and 0.731 on SFX. The reason is that over 60% of system turns contain at least two dialogue acts.
- Availability: the dataset and baseline models are openly available on the group's website dialogue.mi.eng.cam.ac.uk, and the NLG model code is on GitHub (nlg-sclstm-multiwoz).
