SharVeT: Similarity-aware Parameter Sharing with Vector-based Tuning for Efficient LLM Compression
Paper · 2026 · Jeongin Yun, Jaeri Lee, Jongjin Kim et al.
Summary
Large language models are expensive to store and run, and parameter sharing can reduce that memory cost. Existing sharing schemes, however, group layers by fixed positional patterns and rely on bulky LoRA-style adapters to repair the damage. The authors propose SharVeT, which works at the level of individual module types (e.g., query or down projection) rather than whole layers. It has three stages:
- Grouping: spectral clustering forms groups using a combined score of weight-based (structural) and activation-based (functional) similarity.
- Sharing: each group shares a common low-rank basis obtained by SVD of its concatenated weights. Groups with lower internal similarity receive higher rank.
- Refinement: small dual-vector adapters are trained with knowledge distillation from the uncompressed model.
Experiments on TinyLLaMA and LLaMA-3 show that SharVeT beats prior sharing methods at equal compression ratios. It reduces perplexity by up to 32.1% and raises few-shot commonsense accuracy by up to 21.2%. This matters because sharing can be stacked with quantization or pruning to reach higher compression.
Key points
- Cross-layer analysis of LLaMA shows that similarity patterns differ between module types. High-similarity regions also vary in size and character, which motivates grouping each module type separately.
- The similarity measure combines cosine similarity and normalized Frobenius distance between weights with activation similarity. Groups are then formed by spectral clustering, and rank is allocated in inverse proportion to intra-group similarity.
- The vector-based refinement converges faster and to lower loss than a LoRA replacement inside the same pipeline, because it trains far fewer parameters.
- The grouping avoids the outlier groups produced by SEQ, CYCLE, and CYCLE-R strategies.
- Data used: SlimPajama for fine-tuning, plus C4 and WikiText2 (perplexity) and PIQA, ARC-Easy, WinoGrande, and LAMBADA (task accuracy). Evaluation is limited to LLaMA-family models up to the 7B scale. Code is available at github.com/snudatalab/SharVeT.
