Pangea: A Fully Open Multilingual Multimodal LLM for 39 Languages
Paper · 2024 · Xiang Yue, Yueqi Song, Akari Asai et al.
Summary
Most multimodal LLMs are trained and tested mainly on English, Western-centric material. As a result, they handle other languages poorly and misread culturally specific images. The authors address this with Pangea-7B, an open multilingual vision-language model, and PangeaIns, a 6M-sample instruction-tuning set covering 39 languages. The data comes from three sources:
- curated English instructions,
- English instructions machine-translated with Gemini 1.5 Pro (NLLB-3B handled code and math prompts badly),
- culture-focused examples built from LAION-Multi images.
For the cultural examples, an LLM rated alt texts for informativeness and tagged them by topic and country. The kept images were then recaptioned in detail, and new instruction–response pairs were generated from them.
For evaluation, the authors assembled PangeaBench: 14 datasets in 47 languages. It includes two new sets. xChat is a human-written open-ended chat test scored against rubrics, and xMMMU is a translated MMMU.
Pangea-7B roughly ties the best open models in English and clearly beats them on multilingual tasks. Data, code and checkpoints are fully released, which makes the work useful for building systems for under-served languages.
Key points
- PangeaIns is about 40% English and 60% multilingual. It includes LAION-Culture (1.5M culturally oriented samples), around 1.2M translated items and about 1M from existing open multilingual sets.
- Compared with the strongest open MLLMs, Pangea-7B scores on average 0.4% higher on English tasks and 10.9% higher on multilingual ones. Its gains are clearest on xChat, CVQA and MaRVL.
- On some tasks, such as XGQA, it equals or beats GPT4o and Gemini-1.5-Pro. However, it still trails them in multimodal chat and complex reasoning.
- xMMMU covers seven languages. On it, Pangea-7B scores 45.7 in English and 43.7 averaged across the other languages. On MGSM it reaches 82.0 in English.
- Ablations show that overall results depend on three factors: the share of English data, how widely a language is used, and how many multimodal training samples there are.
