M3Exam: A Multilingual, Multimodal, Multilevel Benchmark for Examining Large Language Models
Paper · 2023 · Wenxuan Zhang, Sharifah Mahani Aljunied, Chang Gao et al.
Summary
Most exam-style benchmarks for large language models are English-only, text-only, and mix questions of unclear difficulty. M3Exam addresses all three gaps. Native speakers in nine countries collected official graduation exams from the end of primary, middle, and high school, along with their answer keys. Because the questions come from each country's own exams rather than translations of English material, they keep local cultural knowledge. The result is 12,317 multiple-choice questions. Each is tagged with language, level, subject, and whether it needs an image, and about 23% do.
The authors tested leading text and multimodal models. GPT-4 was the only model to score above 60%, and it still did poorly on low-resource languages such as Javanese and non-Latin scripts such as Thai. Multimodal systems like BLIP-2 stayed under 50%, struggling with complex images and with reasoning across several images. Unlike human students, the models did not consistently get worse as the school level rose. This suggests their competence develops differently from human learning. The benchmark offers a way to track multilingual and multimodal progress in LLMs.
Key points
- Coverage: M3Exam has 12,317 questions in 9 languages, each from one country: English (US), Chinese, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Vietnamese, Thai, Swahili (Kenya), Afrikaans (South Africa), and Javanese (Indonesia).
- Text vs. images: 9,501 questions are text-only and 2,816 need at least one image. Languages were chosen to vary in CommonCrawl share, script, and language family.
- Model results: GPT-4 is the only model above 60% accuracy. BLIP-2 and other multimodal models score below 50%.
- Level and subject effects: Accuracy does not fall steadily from primary to high school. In ChatGPT's per-subject results for en, zh, vi, and th, math is the weakest area and natural and social sciences are stronger.
- Format and availability: All questions are multiple-choice, so open-ended or creative answers are not tested. Data and evaluation code are at github.com/DAMO-NLP-SG/M3Exam (NeurIPS 2023 Datasets and Benchmarks track).
