Packed Levitated Marker for Entity and Relation Extraction
Paper · 2022 · Deming Ye, Yankai Lin, Peng Li et al.
Summary
Entity and relation extraction systems built on pre-trained encoders like BERT usually frame NER as span classification and RE as span-pair classification. However, they encode each span or pair in isolation and miss how candidates relate to each other. Ye et al. propose PL-Marker (Packed Levitated Markers), which appends many levitated markers to one input so that related candidates are encoded together. These markers are extra tokens that reuse the position embeddings of a span's boundary tokens and are bound to each other through directional attention. For NER, a neighborhood-oriented packing sorts candidate spans by start and then end position and groups adjacent ones (up to size K). This lets the model compare overlapping candidates and locate entity boundaries more precisely. For RE, a subject-oriented scheme marks the subject with solid markers and packs all its candidate objects as levitated markers. An object-oriented variant covers the reverse direction. The model beats a T-Concat baseline on six NER benchmarks and outperforms the previous best RE system on ACE04, ACE05 and SciERC while running faster. The work shows that encoding spans jointly can improve both accuracy and efficiency.
Key points
- Compared with the prior state of the art (PURE), PL-Marker gains 4.1–4.3% strict relation F1 on ACE04 and ACE05.
- Against PURE (Full), it runs 2.2x–2.8x faster and scores higher on ACE05 and SciERC. Against PURE (Approx.), it improves relation F1 (boundaries) by 2.8–4.0%.
- In ablations, replacing the solid subject marker with a second pair of levitated markers lowers F1 by 2.0–3.8% when gold entities are given. Dropping the inverse relations costs 0.9–1.1%, and dropping the auxiliary entity type loss costs 0.4–0.7%.
- Neighborhood-oriented packing clearly outperforms random packing on NER. The authors describe this as the first use of levitated markers for NER.
