COIG-P: A High-Quality and Large-Scale Chinese Preference Dataset for Alignment with Human Values
Paper · 2026 · Siwei Wu, JinCheng Ren, Xeron Du et al.
Summary
Chinese alignment work lacks good preference data. Existing Chinese datasets are small, often drawn from a single source such as Zhihu, and seldom checked by training models on them. Human labelling is also too costly to scale. The authors build an annotation pipeline that uses LLMs only, with no human labelling. They gathered about 92k Chinese queries across six domains: chat, logic, maths, novel continuation, role-play and coding. The queries were deduplicated and quality-filtered. Fifteen open and proprietary LLMs then wrote candidate answers. Eight LLMs scored those answers, and no model judged its own output, which reduces single-judge bias. Scored answers were paired into chosen/rejected examples according to score differences. The result is COIG-P, with roughly 1M preference pairs. DPO training on COIG-P improved Qwen2/2.5 and Infinity-Instruct models on AlignBench by 2–12%, whereas most earlier Chinese datasets made models worse. The authors also trained an 8B Chinese Reward Model (CRM) and evaluated it on a new human-annotated benchmark, CRBench. The work provides open, scalable resources for Chinese preference alignment and reward modelling.
Key points
- Query collection and filtering: queries came from Baidu Zhidao, Baidu Tieba, Zhihu, Chinese civil-service aptitude tests, and translated English datasets such as HotpotQA.
- Near-duplicates were removed using SentenceBERT similarity above 0.85.
- Qwen2-72B scored the remaining queries, and those below 6/10 were dropped, leaving 92,784 queries.
- Dataset size: COIG-P has about 1,006k pairs, far more than earlier Chinese sets such as HH-RLHF-CN (344k) or CVALUES (145k).
- DPO results: with an Infinity-Instruct-3M-Qwen2-7B backbone, COIG-P raised the AlignBench average from 4.96 to 5.47. Training on CVALUES, by contrast, lowered it to 3.54.
- CRBench results: the benchmark contains 1,040 manually annotated samples.
- CRM scored 69.71 overall, the best among the discriminative reward models tested.
- It trails Claude (74.13) and GPT-4o (86.73).
- Data selection test: a model trained on preference pairs chosen by CRM reached 5.26 on AlignBench, compared with 5.32 when GPT-4o chose the pairs. CRM is also much cheaper to run.
