FedGUI: Benchmarking Federated GUI Agents across Heterogeneous Platforms, Devices, and Operating Systems
Paper · 2026 · WenHao Wang, Haoting Shi, Mengying Yuan et al.
Summary
GUI agents built on vision–language models usually depend on centrally gathered, manually labelled interaction data, which is expensive and hard to scale. Real user activity on phones, browsers and computers could supply far more training signal, but privacy rules keep that data on the device. Federated learning addresses this, yet the only earlier benchmark, FedMABench, was restricted to Android users. FedGUI widens the setting to mobile, web and desktop. It contributes six datasets built from nine public GUI corpora, a shared action space across platforms, seven FL algorithms and support for more than 20 VLMs. The datasets isolate four kinds of non-IID variation: across platforms, devices, operating systems and data sources. The experiments show three things. Adding clients from other platforms still improves the shared agent. Platform and OS differences hurt performance more than within-platform shifts such as app or website skew. Adaptive aggregation methods like FedYogi are the most robust. The benchmark gives the field a reproducible way to build privacy-preserving, cross-platform GUI agents.
Key points
- Datasets: six datasets with 29 subsets in total: FedGUI-Platform, -Device, -OS, -Web, -Mobile and -Full.
- They draw on AndroidControl, Android-in-the-Wild, GUI Odyssey, GUIAct, Mind2Web, OmniAct (Web/MacOS/Windows) and AgentSynth.
- Coverage spans 900+ mobile apps, 40+ desktop apps and 200+ websites.
- Evaluation set: each of the nine sources has a fixed test set of 100 episodes.
- Action space: six basic actions (e.g., CLICK, TYPE) are shared by all platforms, with platform-specific actions mapped into separate domains.
- Model results: after federated fine-tuning, several compact open-source models beat large proprietary ones such as GPT-4o.
- Qwen3-VL-2B-Instruct rises from about 11.7% to 49.8% average success rate under the Full IID setting.
- Efficiency:
- Sending only LoRA adapters costs about 84 MB per round, compared with 16.5 GB for the full Qwen3-VL-8B model.
- All training runs on a single RTX 4090.
