Redefining Retrieval Evaluation in the Era of LLMs
Paper · 2026 · Giovanni Trappolini, Florin Cuconasu, Simone Filice et al.
Summary
Classic retrieval metrics such as nDCG, MAP and MRR were built for people who read result lists from the top down. They count every non-relevant document as harmless. In RAG pipelines, however, an LLM reads the whole retrieved set at once, and passages that are on-topic but lack the answer can actively mislead it. As a result, these metrics predict downstream answer quality poorly.
The authors replace human relevance labels with a continuous, LLM-centred utility score. It records both how much a passage helps generation and how much a non-answering passage distracts the model, using an abstention-probability measure from earlier work. On top of these scores they define UDCG (Utility and Distraction-aware Cumulative Gain). Its position weighting is tuned for LLM readers and fitted to maximise correlation with end-to-end accuracy.
Across five QA datasets and six LLMs, UDCG tracks RAG accuracy much more closely than traditional metrics. This makes it a better target for evaluating and tuning retrievers in RAG systems.
Key points
- Correlation gain: UDCG improves correlation with RAG accuracy by up to 36%. Averaged over all LLMs and datasets, this equals about +10 points of Spearman correlation over NDCG.
- Two variants:
- UDCG θ is a learned version trained only on NQ, yet it stays competitive on the other benchmarks.
- A training-free UDCG performs almost the same, which suggests that position discounting matters little in practice.
- Ablation results:
- For UDCG θ, removing the distraction component lowers correlation by 3.4–8%, and reducing utility to binary labels lowers it by up to 17%.
- For training-free UDCG, removing the distraction component costs about 4% on average.
- Stability across context sizes: With Qwen 7B on NQ and k from 1 to 10, UDCG correlations stay between 0.554 and 0.704. NDCG and Precision show 1.6× and 1.38× larger standard deviations.
- Limitations: The method requires access to LLM logits and was tested only on English QA data with the BGE-large-en-v1.5 retriever. Code and data are available at github.com/GiovanniTRA/UDCG.
