FeedTrans: Enhance Machine Translation via Feedback
Paper · 2026 · Zengkui Sun, Jiali Zeng, Jiaan Wang et al.
Summary
Reinforcement learning (RL) for machine translation usually rewards a model only for what it can already produce. This limits gains on terminology and domain-specific phrasing the base model gets wrong. For example, a model may render the gymnastics term "vault" as "safe box" in every sampled output. FeedTrans (Feedback-driven Translation) addresses this by using an LLM judge, DeepSeek-v3, in two ways. It assigns a 0–100 quality score, and it also writes a short critique of the key errors. In the proposed FeedRollout mechanism, the weakest translations in each batch are sent back to the policy model with that critique appended to its reasoning trace. The model then runs a second rollout to correct them, which widens the set of candidates that RL can learn from. The system is trained with GRPO after a cold-start SFT stage and evaluated on six translation tasks, two in-domain and four out-of-domain. The 7B model beats baselines ranging from 7B to 14B and shows stronger self-reflection. The authors describe this as the first use of textual feedback inside MT-oriented RL.
Key points
- Reward design: a regex-based format reward checks the
<think>…</think>+ translation structure. A translation reward from DeepSeek-v3 (671B, AWQ-quantized) returns both a score and error feedback. - FeedRollout: in each batch, the bottom 30% of translations are refined in a second, feedback-guided rollout. RL uses GRPO via VeRL with N = 8 rollouts, batch size 64, and learning rate 1e-6.
- Pipeline: cold-start SFT is done with Llama-Factory on long-thought data distilled from DeepSeek-R1. Backbones include Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct. Baselines include GRPO without FeedRollout, SFT-distilled "FullData" models, and MT-Patcher variants.
- Evaluation: En→Zh test sets are Flores, CultureMT, Tico19, MetaphorTrans and RedTrans, scored with COMET / COMETKiwi averaged over 4 samples. SFT hyperparameter sweeps changed scores by less than 0.1.
