Leveraging GPT-4 for Automatic Translation Post-Editing
Paper · 2023 · Vikas Raunak, Amr Sharaf, Yiren Wang et al.
Summary
Even strong NMT systems sometimes produce badly broken output, so translations used in high-stakes settings still need post-editing. The authors ask whether an LLM can do this job directly, without first running quality estimation or error detection. They frame the task generatively: the model receives a source and a translation, may optionally list proposed improvements as a chain of thought (CoT), and then outputs a revised translation. They test GPT-4 and gpt-3.5-turbo on Microsoft-Translator outputs for the WMT-22 General MT test sets, and on MQM-annotated WMT-20/21 system outputs that contain major errors. Four research questions guide the study, each tied to a specific measurement.
GPT-4's edits generally raise quality and often target the spans that human annotators marked as errors. Its post-editing beats the WMT-22 best systems on several language pairs. Its proposed edits also appear in its final outputs far more consistently than gpt-3.5-turbo's. However, GPT-4 sometimes hallucinates edits, so it should be trusted as an expert post-editor only with care.
Key points
- Prompting settings and metrics: Three settings were compared: post-editing with CoT, without CoT, and with Structured-CoT (SCoT), where the intermediate step is an MQM-style annotation.
- Quality was scored with COMET-QE, COMET-KIWI, COMET-20 and COMET-22.
- Similarity between translations was measured with TER from SacreBLEU.
- Effect of CoT on closeness to the input: CoT keeps the output anchored to the initial translation.
- With CoT, TER against the initial translation was 70.3, versus 94.5 without CoT.
- Against GPT-4's own zero-shot translation, TER was 92.0 with CoT and 84.6 without it.
- Effect of CoT on quality: Including edit proposals slightly lowered final quality compared with no CoT. Adding MQM structure (SCoT) neither helped nor hurt quality.
- Benchmark result: GPT-4 post-editing surpassed the WMT-22 best results on English-Chinese, English-German, Chinese-English and German-English. Gains were larger when translating into English.
- New measurements: The authors introduce Edit Efficacy over Error Spans (E3S) and Edit Realization Rate (ERR).
- On ERR, GPT-4 showed a large jump over gpt-3.5-turbo, which the authors describe as an emergent ability.
- Because GPT-4 is accessible only through an API, data contamination of the WMT-22 sets cannot be ruled out.
