ExStrucTiny: A Benchmark for Schema-Variable Structured Information Extraction from Document Images
Paper · 2026 · Mathieu Sibue, Andrés Muñoz Garza, Samuel Mensah et al.
Summary
Generalist vision-language models (VLMs) score well on standard document understanding benchmarks. It is less clear whether they can pull many related fields out of varied business documents and arrange them according to a schema the user defines on the fly. Existing resources do not test this well. KEE and RE datasets rely on fixed entity ontologies and a single document type. Document VQA mostly asks single-span questions that closely mirror the document wording.
The authors present ExStrucTiny, a small benchmark that combines elements of KEE, RE and VQA. It contains closed IE queries (in plain text or as a schema) and on-demand IE queries over multi-page documents. Answers are JSON objects holding verbatim values, page indices and bounding boxes. The data comes from manual annotation plus LLM-generated samples that humans checked. The paper also proposes an evaluation framework covering text, page, box and structure quality.
Testing open and closed VLMs shows that closed Gemini models lead. All models struggle with localization, under-specified queries, charts and free text. This makes the benchmark useful for measuring progress toward flexible, schema-driven extraction.
Key points
- Dataset scope: 304 query-answer pairs over 110 multi-page English documents, spanning document types that include webpage screenshots, slide presentations, financial reports and forms. The full data is available on request for research use only.
- Query difficulty: compared with KEE/VQA test splits, queries request about 4.0 entities and 8.7 values on average. 41% ask for at least one missing entity, and lexical overlap with the document is only 47%.
- Metrics:
- ANLS for extracted text;
- page accuracy and bounding-box IoU/proximity for localization;
- LLM-based schema mapping for recall, precision and F1;
- tree edit similarity for output structure.
- Main results:
- Gemini-2.5-Pro and Gemini-2.5-Flash reach mapping recall of 88.1% and 87.3%.
- Open models need roughly 12B or more parameters to produce enough valid extraction leaves; Kimi-VL-A3B-16B manages only 5.1%.
- Gemma-3-27B and Qwen2.5-VL-72B are among the strongest models on structure similarity.
- Chart and free-text contexts are the weakest setting for 11 of 12 models.
- Limitations: the benchmark is English-only, and ANLS is ill-suited to numbers and dates (26% of values). Schema mapping depends on a slower, imperfect text-only LLM.
