mPLUG-DocOwl2: High-resolution Compressing for OCR-free Multi-page Document Understanding
Paper · 2025 · Anwen Hu, Haiyang Xu, Liang Zhang et al.
Summary
OCR-free multimodal LLMs read documents well when they encode pages at high resolution. The cost is thousands of visual tokens per page, which slows inference, uses a lot of GPU memory and makes long multi-page documents impractical. The authors build mPLUG-DocOwl2 on DocOwl 1.5 and add a High-resolution DocCompressor after its vision-to-text module, H-Reducer.
The compressor uses cross-attention. Features of a low-resolution global image serve as layout-aware queries. Each query attends only to the high-resolution crop features at the same relative position, so every page is reduced to 324 tokens.
Training has three stages:
- Single-image Pretraining
- Multi-image Continue-pretraining
- Multi-task Finetuning
The model reaches state-of-the-art results on multi-page document benchmarks and a text-rich video benchmark. It also cuts first-token latency by more than half. On single pages it matches comparable models while using under a fifth of their visual tokens. This makes efficient reading of whole documents feasible. Code, models and data are public.
Key points
- Each page image is compressed to 324 visual tokens. For comparison, InternVL 2 uses about 3k tokens for an A4 page.
- First-token latency drops by over 50%. Across 10 single-image document benchmarks, the model performs comparably with under 20% of the visual tokens.
- In ablations on DocVQA and MP-DocVQA, multi-image continue-pretraining notably helps documents longer than 10 pages. Combining single- and multi-image finetuning works best.
- On synthetic A4 pages, parsing is near-perfect below roughly 5,000 characters. At 6,104 characters in font size 10, ANLS is still 92.56%.
- At 595×842 input, training VRAM is about 20 GB with DocCompressor versus about 61 GB with an MLP projector. Released at github.com/X-PLUG/mPLUG-DocOwl (DocOwl2).
