MLSUM: The Multilingual Summarization Corpus
Summary
Most summarization corpora exist only in English. Multilingual work has therefore relied on training in English and transferring to other languages through pre-trained models such as M-BERT, and this approach shows a clear quality gap for non-English targets. To address this, the authors built MLSUM, a corpus of more than 1.5M article/summary pairs in French, German, Spanish, Russian and Turkish. They followed the CNN/Daily Mail recipe: news articles serve as inputs, and human-written highlights or descriptions taken from each page's HTML serve as references. The sources are generalist newspapers with large online archives, such as Le Monde, Süddeutsche Zeitung and El Pais. Combined with CNN/DM, the result is a six-language benchmark. The authors compared Lead-3, TextRank, Oracle, Pointer-Generator and M-BERT across languages using ROUGE. The comparison shows that important content is placed differently in different languages, that TextRank appears tuned toward English, and that M-BERT gains most where self-attention matters, as in German. The resource allows models to be trained and evaluated directly in each language rather than only through zero-shot transfer from English.
Key points
- MLSUM contains 1.5M+ article/summary pairs across 5 languages (FR, DE, ES, RU, TR). Its size per language is comparable to CNN/DM, except for Russian, so it can serve as a multilingual extension of that dataset.
- Lead-3 ROUGE-L scores vary strongly by language: German 35.20 and English 33.09, compared with French 19.69 and Spanish 13.70. This suggests key information is more spread out in French and Spanish articles.
- The ratio of TextRank to Pointer-Generator performance is 0.85–1.21 on English corpora (CNN/DM, DUC, NEWSROOM) but only 0.37–0.65 on the other languages. This points to an English bias in TextRank.
- M-BERT beats Pointer-Generator in every language, with a much larger gain for German than for French. The authors connect this to self-attention and German's freer word order.
- The authors propose further uses of the corpus: multilingual QA built by masking named entities, News Title Generation from the archived titles, and topic detection from URL categories (all languages except Turkish).
