Audio description between MT translation and recreation: An Interview Study for the Language Pair English-German

Summary

The paper asks whether machine-translating an existing English audio description (AD) into German is acceptable to German users. Normally a new German AD is written from scratch, which takes time and money. The authors ran a small qualitative interview study with blind and visually impaired German participants. Participants heard film clips with two AD versions synchronised to the German dub: a machine-translated version of the English original (ADT) and a native German human AD (ADN). The questions focused on three topics: how characters are described and introduced by name, how facial expressions and body gestures are conveyed, and how settings in space and time are established. These are areas where the British Ofcom and German NDR guidelines diverge. Participants judged ADT helpful and understandable in the large majority of cases. Overall, ADN still came out slightly ahead in both comprehensibility and preference. Individual tastes varied widely, partly depending on when sight was lost. The study suggests that translated AD could be a viable, cheaper route to accessible media. The authors call for larger user studies and further work on MT quality and production costs.

Key points

  • Design: English AD written under Ofcom guidelines was machine-translated (ADT) and compared with native German AD (ADN) produced under the NDR approach. One NDR-related principle is naming characters only after the name appears in the dialogue.
  • Acceptance vs. preference: ADT was rated helpful and comprehensible in most cases on its own terms. When compared directly, ADN was preferred and understood better more often.
  • Gestures: Most participants preferred objective descriptions, such as "finger to her lips", over interpretive ones, such as "signals her to be quiet". Some suggested combining the two.
  • Spatio-temporal settings: In one scene, four participants favoured ADT's richer room detail. Three preferred ADT's explicit flashback/present markers for clearer time shifts.
  • Audience heterogeneity: Congenitally or early blind participants found colour descriptions less useful than late-blind participants did. The small sample means no firm link between blindness type and ADT/ADN preference could be established.
