INCLUDE: Evaluating Multilingual Language Understanding with Regional Knowledge
Paper · 2024 · Angelika Romanou, Negar Foroutan, Anna Sotnikova et al.
Summary
Multilingual LLMs are hard to assess outside English because few evaluation sets exist. Many that do are translated from English, so they carry translation artifacts and ignore local context such as national laws, history or culture. INCLUDE addresses this with a benchmark built from exams written by native speakers for their own countries. These include school and university tests, professional certifications (legal, medical) and regional licenses (driving, marine).
The authors extracted multiple-choice questions from PDFs and web forms. Native-speaker co-authors then checked and corrected them, removed items that depend on images or tables, and tagged each exam with topic, level, country and how region-specific it is. Existing single-language exam benchmarks were merged in as well.
Closed and open models were tested on sampled subsets. Accuracy varied widely by language. Models had particular trouble with region-dependent questions and with languages they were not deliberately trained on.
The resource gives a more realistic picture of how LLMs serve users in their own linguistic and regional settings. It is publicly released on Hugging Face (CohereForAI/include-base-44).
Key points
- Scale: 197,243 MCQA pairs from 1,926 exams, covering 44 languages, 15 scripts, 52 countries and 58 knowledge domains.
- Data sources:
- 118,606 items (60.2%) were newly parsed and verified.
- 78,637 items (39.8%) were reused from ArabicMMLU, ChineseMMLU (CMMLU), TurkishMMLU, PersianMMLU, VNHSGE and EXAMS.
- Regional focus: 92.2% of INCLUDE-BASE questions are labeled region-related. This is far more than in the earlier benchmarks it draws on.
- Error analysis (GPT-4o):
- Missing regional knowledge is the largest error category (38.6%).
- Format failures or hallucinations account for 32.0%.
- General factual gaps account for 26.7%.
- Arithmetic slips account for 2.7%.
- Ukrainian and monolingual models:
- GPT-4o (5-shot, in-language prompting) scores 85.5 on Ukrainian, with 92.4 on Law and 84.0 on Physics.
- Across the six languages compared, GPT-4o outperforms state-of-the-art monolingual models such as ruGPT-3.5-13B and Baichuan-7B.
