Multi-lingual Functional Evaluation for Large Language Models

Paper · 2026 · Victor Ojewale, Inioluwa Deborah Raji and Suresh Venkatasubramanian

Summary

Multilingual ability in LLMs is usually measured with fixed test sets such as Belebele, M-MMLU and M-GSM. These say little about whether a model performs reliably when the same task is phrased in different languages. The authors build two functional benchmarks, CL-GSMSym and CL-IFEval. In functional benchmarks, prompts are generated from templates with changeable values, and correct answers are computed automatically. The source material is the English GSM-Symbolic and IFEval templates, which were machine-translated with Google Translate into French, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic and Yoruba and then checked by native speakers. The authors evaluated six open-weight models with the EleutherAI lm-eval harness and compared the results with static benchmarks. Functional scores often fall well below static ones, by an amount that depends on model and language. The functional tests also widen cross-language gaps, reorder model rankings, and reveal failures that cluster in particular task types. The work matters because it shows that static scores alone can mislead deployment decisions in non-English and low-resource settings. Both datasets are public.

Key points

  • Datasets:
    • CL-GSMSym: 100 templates, each instantiated 50 times, giving 5,000 QA pairs per language.
    • CL-IFEval: 371 prompts, cut down from IFEval's 541 by removing case-based instructions that cannot apply to Arabic and Hindi scripts.
    • Both are hosted on Hugging Face under vojewale.
  • Models: Aya 23-35B, Aya Expanse-32B, Gemma-2-9B-it, Qwen3-8B, Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.3 and Mixtral-8x7B-Instruct-v0.1.
  • Static vs. functional gaps:
    • Moving from Belebele to CL-IFEval lowers scores by roughly 15% to more than 35%, depending on model and language.
    • M-GSM and CL-GSMSym diverge in both directions: some models score higher on the functional test and others lower.
  • Concentrated failures:
    • No model ever passed the startend instruction category in Yoruba.
    • Probabilistic inference (template T3) was the weakest problem family in every language, English included.
  • Unexpected strength: On CL-GSMSym, Aya-23-35B scored higher in Arabic than in the high-resource languages. Static benchmarks do not reveal this.
