PL-MTEB: Polish Massive Text Embedding Benchmark

Paper · 2026 · Rafał Poświata, Sławomir Dadas and Michał Wiktor Perełkiewicz

Summary

Polish text embedding models have mostly been tested on isolated tasks or retrieval-only suites, and the original MTEB is dominated by English data. The authors present PL-MTEB, a Polish member of the family of language-specific MTEB extensions. It contains 30 tasks across classification, clustering, pair classification, retrieval and STS. Some tasks already existed in MTEB, mainly BEIR-PL retrieval sets, several in HardNeg form. The authors converted 12 more from existing manually annotated Polish datasets, many taken from KLEJ. Clustering was poorly covered, so they built two new corpora, PLSC (from Library of Science metadata) and Wikinews-PL, which yield four clustering tasks. They compared 30 public models (12 Polish, 18 multilingual), both overall and by size. Qwen3-Embedding-8B had the best average, but no model won every task type. Retrieval results are partly inflated by overlap with training data. The benchmark is merged into MTEB with open code, data and a leaderboard, giving Polish a shared evaluation standard.

Key points

  • 30 tasks in 5 categories. Main metrics are accuracy (classification), v-measure (clustering), cosine-based average precision (pair classification), nDCG@10 (retrieval) and cosine Spearman correlation (STS).
  • PLSC holds about 160K Polish publication records labeled with 8 fields and 44 disciplines. It supports the hierarchical tasks PlscHierarchicalS2S (titles) and PlscHierarchicalP2P (titles plus abstracts). WikinewsPLS2S and WikinewsPLP2P complete the clustering set.
  • Qwen3-Embedding-8B and BGE-Multilingual-Gemma2 led overall. stella-pl-retrieval-8k topped retrieval and stella-pl topped STS.
  • Among small models (<150M), mmlw-roberta-base (124M) outperformed most base-size models.
  • Limitations include no long-document tasks, only one dataset each for domains such as law and finance, and no closed API models (e.g., OpenAI text-embedding-3-small). Resources are at github.com/rafalposwiata/pl-mteb and huggingface.co/PL-MTEB.
