MTEB-NL and E5-NL: Embedding Benchmark and Models for Dutch
Paper · 2026 · Nikolay Banar, Ehsan Lotfi, Jens Van Nooten et al.
Summary
Dutch has only a small share of the data inside multilingual embedding resources, and it had no broad benchmark or strong dedicated embedding models. The authors address this with three releases. The first is MTEB-NL, a 40-dataset benchmark built in the MTEB format. It mixes existing Dutch datasets with newly created ones and favours data that mainstream embedders have rarely been fine-tuned on, so that evaluation stays zero-shot. The second is a training mixture: Dutch retrieval sets such as mMARCO-NL and BEIR-NL, plus LLM-generated synthetic examples (SynEmbedNL) that cover tasks other than retrieval. The third is E5-NL, a family of compact models derived from E5. The best variants start from multilingual E5 with its vocabulary cut down to Dutch. Among non-instruct models, E5-NL performs best, and the large version beats some instruction-tuned models. Only the strongest instruct models, multilingual-e5-large-instruct and Qwen3-Embedding-4B, stay ahead of it. Everything is published on the Hugging Face Hub and integrated into the MTEB package and leaderboard, which gives Dutch a reproducible evaluation and training base.
Key points
- MTEB-NL has 40 datasets spanning MTEB task types, including retrieval, reranking, classification, pair-classification and clustering. It follows the quality principles of MMTEB, though some datasets are machine- or human-translated.
- Initialization matters. The "-trm" models (mE5 with a trimmed vocabulary) keep the quality of their multilingual parent while being much smaller. They also beat the "-t2t" models (English E5 with a translated vocabulary) of the same size, both before and after fine-tuning.
- Results by model size:
- E5-small-trm-nl outperforms base-sized models and some large ones, such as LaBSE and Arctic-embed-l-v2.0.
- E5-base-trm-nl roughly matches jina-embeddings-v3 and Qwen3-Embedding-0.6B at about a quarter of their size.
- E5-large-trm-nl surpasses Qwen3-Embedding-0.6B and KaLM-multilingual-mini-instruct-v1.
- Self-supervised encoders evaluated with averaged token vectors fall behind supervised models, most of all on retrieval. Multilingual ones (mBERT, mDeBERTa-v3, XLM-R) do worst. BERTje-base has the best average but leads in only one task, clustering.
- RobBERT-2023-base/large fine-tuned without a weak-supervision stage are surprisingly competitive. The authors expect they would gain from that stage.
Interesting ideas
- I1. When building the benchmark, deliberately pick datasets that popular models have seldom trained on, so scores reflect generalization rather than memorized training splits.
- I2. Cutting a multilingual model's vocabulary down to one language gives a much smaller model with no measurable loss, and it beats re-mapping a monolingual model's vocabulary.
- I3. Real labelled data alone covers only one task family well, so the authors fill the gaps with LLM-generated synthetic examples targeted at the missing task types.
- I4. A model can top the average while winning in only one category, as BERTje-base does, so per-task breakdowns matter as much as one mean score.
- I5. The authors warn that heavily reused benchmarks gradually stop being zero-shot and invite overfitting, so evaluation suites need refreshing over time.
For Mova
How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:
- I1 (learn): Keep a held-out evaluation pool of texts that no witness parser or LLM teacher has seen, and audit for overlap before reporting gains.
- I2 (tree): A multilingual encoder behind gparse could have its embedding table trimmed to English-relevant subwords, saving GPU memory and speeding up parsing.
- I3 (learn): LLM teacher tiers could generate silver examples aimed at constructions and frame types that are rare in existing treebanks or VerbNet-backed data.
- I4 (answer): Report reader accuracy separately for school tests, maths word problems and fable QA instead of one blended number, so weak skills are not masked.
- I5 (answer): Rotate in fresh fables and test items periodically, and treat stable scores on the old set as a possible sign of tuning to it.
