MMTEB: Massive Multilingual Text Embedding Benchmark
Paper · 2025 · Kenneth Enevoldsen, Isaac Chung, Imene Kerboua et al.
Summary
Embedding models are usually tested on narrow benchmarks that cover few languages, domains and task types, and full evaluation is often too costly for communities with little compute. MMTEB addresses both issues. It is an open, community-built extension of MTEB with more than 500 evaluation tasks in 10 categories and over 250 languages. Tasks range from fiction and social media to medical texts and programming, and include instruction following, long-document retrieval, reasoning and code retrieval. Every contributed dataset needed metadata, a review and sanity checks against baseline models.
From this pool the authors build several benchmarks, including multilingual, English and code variants. They make these cheaper to run by:
- selecting tasks based on inter-task correlation,
- shrinking retrieval corpora with hard-negative pooling,
- reusing embeddings for clustering.
Across the evaluated models, 7B LLM-based embedders lead on some languages and categories. The strongest public model overall, however, is the much smaller multilingual-e5-large-instruct. The reduced benchmarks keep model rankings close to the full versions at a fraction of the cost, which makes broad evaluation practical for low-resource language communities.
Key points
- Scale: 500+ quality-controlled tasks, 10 task categories, 250+ languages. Code is at github.com/embeddings-benchmark/mteb, with a public leaderboard on Hugging Face.
- Best public multilingual model: multilingual-e5-large-instruct, with 560M parameters. On MTEB(eng, v2), e5-mistral-7b-instruct ranks first, and GritLM-7B tops MTEB(Code).
- Cheaper English benchmark: the new zero-shot English benchmark uses about 2% of the original documents and keeps a similar ranking. A 7B model runs in roughly 3.11 hours on an H100, compared with up to two days on an A100 for MTEB(eng, v1).
- Retrieval downsampling: the top 250 pooled documents per query are kept, and queries are capped at 1,000. This cuts the largest corpora from over 5M documents to at most 250k.
- Clustering speedup: a bootstrapped evaluation on a 4% subsample gives a 16.11× average speedup, with rankings largely preserved (Spearman 0.96).
