SEACrowd: A Multilingual Multimodal Data Hub and Benchmark Suite for Southeast Asian Languages
Paper · 2024 · Holy Lovenia, Rahmad Mahendra, Salsabil Maulana Akbar et al.
Summary
Southeast Asia is home to more than 1,300 indigenous languages, yet the region's text, speech and image data is thinly represented in the corpora that train modern AI systems. Existing SEA datasets are fragmented, poorly documented and inconsistently formatted, and earlier evaluations covered fewer than ten SEA languages in total. SEACrowd is a community project, driven largely by researchers from the region, that addresses this gap. Contributors submit datasheets for public datasets in three modalities: text, speech and vision-language. The organisers manually verify each datasheet's metadata. Every approved source then receives a dataloader that follows a shared seacrowd schema and records licensing and provenance. From manually annotated or validated subsets, the authors build the SEACrowd Benchmarks. They use them to test commercial, English-centric, multilingual and SEA-specific models in a zero-shot setting. One finding is that LLM output in nine SEA languages looks more like translationese than native text. The paper ends by proposing that future investment be prioritised using two measures: potential utility and resource equity. The project thus supplies both shared infrastructure and a planning framework for SEA AI.
Key points
- Scale of the hub:
- 498 datasheets in the SEACrowd Catalogue and 399 standardized dataloaders in the SEACrowd Data Hub, spanning roughly 1,000 SEA languages.
- Only 38.4% of the sources were originally hosted on Hugging Face.
- Three private datasets were made public through the project.
- Dataset composition:
- By modality: about 81% text, 11% speech and 8% vision-language.
- About 53% of datasets carry commercially permissive licenses.
- 83 tasks (66 NLP, 10 VL, 7 speech) are mapped onto 20 dataloader schemas.
- Benchmark design:
- NLU: 131 subsets across 7 tasks, covering English plus 33 SEA languages.
- NLG: 100 subsets covering MT in both directions, summarization and QA in 27 languages.
- ASR: 19 subsets in 15 languages.
- Image captioning: only 4 languages (FIL, IND, THA, VIE).
- The paper reports total benchmark language coverage inconsistently, as 36 in one place and 38 in another.
- Motivating gap: SEA languages make up just 2.36% of Common Crawl and 10.62% of C4.
- Prioritisation results:
- Potential utility: national languages such as IND, MYA, VIE, THA and FIL rank highest, with Malay, Burmese and Filipino showing clear naturalness gaps.
- Resource equity: under-resourced languages include TTS, NOD, HMV, SOU, CEB and ILO.
- Stated limitations include missing dialects and very little code-switched data.
