WildSci: Advancing Scientific Reasoning from In-the-Wild Literature
Paper · 2026 · Tengxiao Liu, Deepak Nathani, Zekun Li et al.
Summary
Reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) has driven LLM reasoning gains mostly in math and code. Science lags behind because training data cover few fields, rarely reach research level, and many scientific questions lack one checkable answer. The authors address this with WildSci, a dataset of about 56K multiple-choice questions built automatically from open-access Nature Communications articles. It spans 9 disciplines and 26 subdomains. The pipeline works in stages:
- An LLM drafts standalone questions with answers and rationales from each paper's text.
- Heuristic filters remove items that depend on figures, tables or exact results.
- A refinement step rewrites questions, strips obvious cues and expands the options to ten.
- An ensemble of open-source models votes to discard unanswerable items and sorts the rest by agreement level.
Using the multiple-choice format gives simple rule-based rewards. RL finetuning on WildSci consistently improves scores on GPQA, SuperGPQA and MMLU-Pro. Because new papers keep appearing, the approach offers a renewable, contamination-resistant source of research-grounded training data.
Key points
- Data source: WildSci is built from Nature Communications papers published up to April 2024, with three questions per paper. The journal's subject areas are remapped to the SuperGPQA taxonomy. The data is on Hugging Face (JustinTX/WildSci) under CC BY 4.0.
- Benchmark gains: For Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct, the science average across GPQA-Aug, SuperGPQA and MMLU-Pro rises from 24.52 to 30.71 after WildSci training. Combining MATH with WildSci reaches 32.12.
- Value of refinement: Removing the refinement step lowers the three-benchmark average from 31.78 to 28.83. Checking with 13-gram deduplication found 0.0% overlap with GPQA, SuperGPQA and MMLU-Pro.
- Label quality: Gemini-2.5-Flash and Gemini-2.5-Pro agree with the synthetic labels on 95.0% and 96.0% of sampled All-Aligned questions. On the Majority-Aligned subset, agreement is about 79–80%.
- Reasoning mix: Automatic classification with Qwen2.5-32B-Instruct finds 40.00% numerical, 37.59% causal and 22.41% conceptual or model-analysis questions. The authors note two limitations: some numerical items are simple, and multiple-choice formats can invite shortcut heuristics.
