Nemotron-CrossThink: Scaling Self-Learning beyond Math Reasoning
Paper · 2026 · Syeda Nahida Akter, Shrimai Prabhumoye, Matvei Novikov et al.
Summary
Reinforcement learning (RL) has improved LLM reasoning mainly in math and code, where answers can be checked automatically. Other fields, such as law, the social sciences and humanities, have little RL-ready data and no simple way to verify answers. Nemotron-CrossThink is a recipe for bringing these domains into RL training.
The authors combine open QA sets (Natural Reasoning, MMLU [Train], MATH, NuminaMath) with QA pairs synthesized from CommonCrawl. They recast questions as multiple-choice or open-ended items with short answers, so rule-based rewards still work. They drop items that cannot be verified, test different domain mixes, and train with GRPO.
Starting from Qwen-2.5-7B, the best mix outperforms both math-only RL and Open-Reasoner-Zero on math and general benchmarks. It also uses noticeably fewer tokens on correct answers. A further gain comes from discarding examples that smaller models already solve.
The main lesson is that varied domains and question formats, not just more math, give broader and more efficient reasoning. The curated data is released on HuggingFace.
Key points
- Gains over the base model: MATH-500 +30.1%, AMC23 +27.5%, MMLU-Pro +12.8%, GPQA-Diamond +11.3%, AGIEval +15.1%, SuperGPQA +3.8%. Correct answers use 28% fewer tokens.
- Best data mix: a 2:1 ratio of general-purpose reasoning to math data scored highest, with an average gain of 13.36% across seven benchmarks. Mixing domains beat math-only training by 1.61% on average.
- Effect of templates: converting all questions to open-ended form gave +1.21% over mixed formats. Short-answer targets gave +1.20% over long-form ones.
- Data and filtering: the training pool has about 588.6K samples, including 192,930 from Nemotron-CrossThink-QA. 287.4K curated samples are released as nvidia/Nemotron-CrossThink. Keeping only harder examples added 2.15% average accuracy for Qwen-2.5-32B.
- Limitations:
- The reward relies on exact string matching, which penalizes answers that are correct but worded differently.
- Hyperparameters were not tuned.
- Every run was capped at 650 steps.
