EuroLLM: Multilingual Language Models for Europe
Written for the Research library (claude-opus-5-5) from the paper text. Original — arxiv.org/pdf/2409.16235
Summary
Open-weight LLMs such as LLaMA, Mistral and Gemma mostly serve English and a few major languages, leaving many European languages underserved. The EuroLLM project targets all 24 official EU languages plus 11 others, including Ukrainian, Russian, Arabic and Chinese. This report describes how its first models, EuroLLM-1.7B and the instruction-tuned EuroLLM-1.7B-Instruct, were built.
The training corpus mixes four kinds of data: filtered web text, quality-checked parallel data, code/math, and high-quality sources such as Wikipedia. The authors chose the proportions by fitting joint scaling laws on small models. These showed that parallel data improves translation without hurting other domains, and that repeating Wikipedia helps. The authors also trained a 128k-piece BPE tokenizer and a dense Transformer, ending training with an annealing stage richer in educational and non-English content. The models are evaluated on multilingual benchmarks and machine translation, but the scores fall in the part of the text not supplied here.
For Ukrainian NLP, the work offers a compact open multilingual base model and a reusable recipe for mixing training data.
Key points
- Coverage: 35 languages in total, 24 EU and 11 additional, among them Ukrainian.
- Web data sources:
- English uses FineWeb-edu, keeping documents with an educational score above 2.
- German, Spanish, French and Italian use RedPajama-Data-v2.
- Other languages combine HPLT, MADLAD-400, CulturaX and mC4, processed with a CCNet-based pipeline.
- Parallel data filtering: pairs are kept only above Bicleaner 0.5 (0.6 for Portuguese) and COMETKIWI-22 0.7.
- Scaling-law experiments:
- Setup: 100M/203M/341M-parameter models trained on 100B tokens with 0%, 25% or 37.5% parallel data.
- Outcome: the final corpus uses 20% parallel data per non-English language.
- Language and domain split:
- English drops from 50% to 32.5% in the annealing phase (the last 10% of pre-training).
- Code/math rises from 5% to 7% in the same phase.
- Architecture:
- 24 layers, embedding size 2,048, FFN size 5,632.
- 16 attention heads, with 8 KV heads via GQA.
- SwiGLU activation, RoPE, RMSNorm, 4,096-token context.
- Tokenizer: 128,000-piece SentencePiece BPE. It yields far lower fertility than Mistral's tokenizer and roughly matches Gemma's on European languages.
