Annotating a Japanese Text Corpus with Predicate-Argument and Coreference Relations

Summary

Japanese text understanding needs annotated data for coreference resolution and predicate-argument structure analysis. Existing resources, the Kyoto Text Corpus version 4.0 and the GDA-Tagged Corpus, follow loosely defined guidelines whose reliability had not been seriously tested. The authors revisit the annotation decisions for three phenomena: coreference, verb predicate-argument relations, and the arguments of event-nouns.

For coreference, they keep only identity-of-reference anaphora (IRA) links between mentions of specific, non-generic entities. This separates IRA from identity-of-sense anaphora, a distinction Japanese does not mark lexically. Arguments are labelled with case markers rather than semantic roles, but normalized to the logical cases of the base verb so that passive and causative alternations are undone. Omitted arguments (zero-pronouns) are linked to antecedents inside or outside the sentence, or tagged as exophoric.

Starting from Kyoto Corpus 3.0, they built and publicly released the NAIST Text Corpus and assessed its annotation reliability. The corpus has served as evaluation data for coreference and zero-anaphora resolution, and the paper lists remaining open problems.

Key points

  • The corpus contains annotations for 106,628 predicates and 28,569 event-nouns. Nominative (ga) arguments number 105,915 for predicates and 28,464 for event-nouns.
  • Only about 42% of the nominative arguments of predicates stand in a direct dependency relation with the predicate. About 43% are zero-anaphoric (30.5% within the sentence, 12.4% across sentences) and 15% are exophoric.
  • A new label, EX-GA, marks the causer in causativized clauses. In the causative example, the eater keeps the ga (Nominative) case of the bare verb.
  • The NAIST Text Corpus is freely downloadable and had been obtained by 102 unique users at the time of writing. It was the evaluation set in Iida et al. (2005, 2006).
  • Open issues include:
    • judging event-hood for compound nouns and event/result readings (e.g., keiyaku "contract");
    • case-frame ambiguity caused by verb alternation;
    • coreference involving abstract and generic nouns.
