Summary
Most evaluations of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) target still images. Existing video benchmarks tend to use short clips, narrow domains and visual input alone. Video-MME addresses this gap with a manually built test set for video understanding. The authors collected 900 YouTube videos across 6 top-level domains and 30 finer categories. Durations run from 11 seconds to one hour, split into short, medium and long groups. Expert annotators watched each video in full and wrote three four-option multiple-choice questions per video, for 2,700 items in total. Subtitles and audio tracks are included so that non-visual inputs can be tested. Among the evaluated systems, Gemini 1.5 Pro scored highest, and open-source models trailed well behind the commercial ones. Adding subtitles or audio raised accuracy, especially on long videos. Every model lost accuracy as video length grew. The benchmark works for both image and video MLLMs. It identifies long-context handling and temporal-reasoning training data as the main areas needing progress.
Key points
- Dataset: 900 videos and 2,700 QA pairs drawn from six domains: multilingual content, life records, artistic performances, sports competitions, film and TV, and knowledge.
- Length groups are short (<2 min), medium (4–15 min) and long (30–60 min).
- 744 videos have subtitles, and all 900 have audio.
- Model results: Gemini 1.5 Pro reached 75% average accuracy and GPT-4o reached 71.9%. The strongest open-source model, VILA-1.5, scored about 59%.
- Image models on video: Qwen-VL-Max and InternVL-Chat-V1.5, given multi-frame input, scored around 50%. This is close to the video-specific LLaVA-NeXT-Video.
- Extra modalities: For Gemini 1.5 Pro, subtitles added 6.2% accuracy and audio added 4.3%. Subtitles generally helped more than audio, with the largest gains on long and knowledge-heavy videos.
- Why accuracy drops on long videos: The authors give three causes:
- long videos contain more reasoning questions;
- fixed frame budgets (e.g., 8 frames) make sampling sparse;
- modelling long contexts is inherently hard.
