Summary
Mind2Web addresses the lack of suitable data for building web agents that follow natural-language instructions on arbitrary real websites, not on simulated pages or a small fixed set of sites. The authors collected over 2,000 open-ended tasks on 137 live websites spanning 31 domains. Crowdworkers proposed the tasks and recorded the action sequences that complete them, while the authors selected the sites and verified the annotations. Each step pairs a page element with an operation, and every page state is archived so that episodes can be replayed offline. As a baseline, the authors propose MindAct. A fine-tuned small LM first prunes the thousands of HTML elements on a page. An LLM then picks the correct element in a multiple-choice format and predicts the operation. This pipeline outperforms modeling strategies from earlier work and generalizes reasonably to unseen websites and even unseen domains, though substantial headroom remains. The released data and models give the community an open benchmark for generalist, LLM-driven web automation.
Key points
-
Scale and coverage: the dataset has 2,000+ tasks from 137 websites in 31 domains. By share of tasks, the top-level categories are Travel (27.4%), Info (20.4%), Service (18.3%), Shopping (17.5%) and Entertainment (16.1%).
-
Action space: each action is a (Target Element, Operation) pair. Three operations are supported: clicking (with hovering and pressing Enter folded into it), typing text, and picking a dropdown choice via Select Option, where typing and option selection additionally take a value argument. Task descriptions state high-level goals rather than step-by-step instructions.
-
Rich snapshots: each step is stored in several formats:
- MHTML pages;
- DOM snapshots with layout and style information;
- screenshots;
- HAR network logs;
- full interaction traces.
Annotation used a Playwright-based tool and Amazon Mechanical Turk workers.
-
MindAct: the model works in two stages, small-LM element filtering followed by LLM multiple-choice selection. It runs with fine-tuned Flan-T5 and with GPT-3.5-turbo or GPT-4 via in-context learning. Evaluation includes out-of-distribution splits for unseen websites and unseen domains.
-
Limitations: the sites are mostly English-language and US-focused, and evaluation is offline, which can penalize valid alternative paths. Visual information and page dynamics are not yet used by the model. The authors also flag safety risks, such as unwanted financial actions and CAPTCHA circumvention.
