Summary
Coming up with research ideas is slow. It requires absorbing a scientific literature that grows by millions of papers each year. Earlier LLM-for-science work mostly helped test existing hypotheses, for example by writing code or running simulations. Classic hypothesis-generation methods only predicted links between pairs of concepts. ResearchAgent instead targets open-ended ideation.
Starting from a seed paper, an LLM drafts three parts in sequence: a problem statement, a method and an experiment design. Two sources enrich its context:
- papers linked to the seed through citations and references in an academic graph;
- entities from a knowledge store built from concept co-occurrences across many papers, intended to surface connections between fields.
LLM-based ReviewingAgents then critique each draft over several revision rounds. Their scoring criteria were derived from real researchers' judgments.
Human and model-based evaluations covered papers from several disciplines. ResearchAgent clearly beat strong LLM baselines, with novelty showing the biggest gain. Ablations confirm that both the entity store and iterative refinement improve results. The work is an early step toward AI assistants for the ideation phase of research.
Key points
- Authors are from KAIST, Microsoft Research and DeepAuto.ai. Code is available at github.com/JinheonBaek/ResearchAgent.
- Feedback comes from 15 ReviewingAgents: three idea components (problem, method, experiment design), each judged on five human-aligned criteria.
- The entity-centric knowledge store uses the BLINK entity linker on titles and abstracts of a limited paper set. It yields only about 3 entities per paper, so coverage is restricted.
- Known limitations include possible hallucinated ideas and weaker fit for proof-heavy theoretical fields. Generated ideas still require experimental validation.
- The ethics discussion flags misuse risks, such as ideas for harmful technologies, and accidental plagiarism of existing work.
