A Family of Pretrained Transformer Language Models for Russian
Paper · 2024 · Dmitry Zmitrovich, Aleksandr Abramov, Andrey Kalmykov et al.
Summary
Openly available Transformer language models built specifically for Russian have been scarce. Researchers have mostly relied on massively multilingual models such as mBERT or XLM-R, plus a few monolingual releases like DeepPavlov's RuBERT. The authors describe a family of 13 Russian models across three architecture types: encoders (ruBERT, ruRoBERTa, ruELECTRA), a decoder (ruGPT-3) and encoder-decoders (ruT5 and the UL2-based FRED-T5). Pretraining data came from Russian and English Wikipedia, news collections, literary texts, the Russian portion of C4 and OpenSubtitles. Corpus size ranged from 30GB to 450GB, depending on the model and when it was trained. The paper documents architectures, tokenizers and training setups. It then finetunes the models and evaluates them on Russian understanding and generation tasks, including Russian SuperGLUE, RuCoLA, inappropriateness identification, simplification, summarization and detoxification. On most tasks the models beat multilingual baselines and earlier Russian models, reaching state-of-the-art results. All weights are public under the MIT license, giving Russian NLP a broad set of reusable baselines.
Key points
- 13 released checkpoints, from ruELECTRA-small (42M parameters) up to FRED-T5-XL (1.74B). Pretraining objectives differ by family:
- MLM & NSP for ruBERT
- MLM for ruRoBERTa
- RTD for ruELECTRA
- LM for ruGPT-3
- span corruption for ruT5
- mixture of denoisers (MoD) for FRED-T5
- The pretraining corpora vary by model. ruBERT used about 30GB, ruRoBERTa 250GB, ruELECTRA 70GB, ruT5/FRED-T5 300GB and ruGPT-3 450GB. ruGPT-3's C4 portion was additionally filtered following Ortiz Suárez et al. (2019).
- Compute example: ruRoBERTa-large (BBPE tokenizer, 50k vocabulary) processed 2T tokens over 21 days on 64 V100 GPUs. The authors' ruBERT-large is the first large-size Russian BERT.
- Comparison baselines include mBERT, DeepPavlov's ruBERT-base and ruBERT-base-conversational. For the RWSD task in Russian SuperGLUE, the authors submitted a majority-class baseline instead of a model prediction.
- Models are hosted on Hugging Face under
ai-forever(MIT license). The evaluation code is at github.com/ai-forever/russian-lm-evaluation.
