Mitigating Hallucinations in Large Vision-Language Models without Performance Degradation
Paper · 2026 · Xingyu Zhu, Junfeng Fang, Shuo Wang et al.
Summary
Large vision-language models (LVLMs) often describe things that are not in the image. Representation-editing fixes are cheaper than fine-tuning on curated data, but they tend to damage general output quality, causing repetitive or incoherent text. The authors trace this damage to two causes. First, the extracted hallucination directions still contain ordinary semantics. Second, the edits touch every weight in the targeted layers.
Their framework, MPD, works in two stages:
- Isolating hallucination directions. An auxiliary LLM builds contrastive pairs: a prompt that induces hallucination and a semantically equivalent faithful one. SVD of the faithful representations defines a grounded subspace, and orthogonal projection away from it isolates the hallucination component.
- Selective editing. Only the weights whose cosine similarity to that component is highest are edited.
Tests use LLaVA-1.5, MiniGPT4 and mPLUG-Owl2 on CHAIR, POPE, MME, LLaVA-Bench and HallusionBench. MPD lowers hallucination by 23.4% while keeping 97.4% of generative ability, and it adds no inference cost. Edited hidden representations stay close to the original distribution, unlike those produced by Nullu. This makes MPD a practical, deployment-friendly fix.
Key points
- Compared with full-layer editing, selective updating cuts parameter perturbation by 42% on mPLUG-Owl2 and 37% on MiniGPT4.
- On LLaVA-Bench (GPT-4V judged), LLaVA-1.5-7B improves from 5.59 to 6.39 in accuracy and from 4.72 to 5.52 in detailedness.
- On adversarial POPE with mPLUG-Owl2, MPD reaches an F1 of 78.72, compared with 76.58 for the original model and 77.15 for Nullu.
- In the layer ablation on LLaVA-1.5-7B, editing layers 16–32 works best (CHAIR S 12.80, CHAIR I 4.20), while narrow, deep-only ranges are weaker.
- The authors note that MPD does not address hallucinations caused by data bias or prompt design, and that its robustness on ambiguous images is untested.
