R^3AG: Retriever Routing for Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Paper · 2026 · Tong Zhao, Yutao Zhu, Yucheng Tian et al.

Summary

Most RAG pipelines use one fixed retriever, even though queries differ in which retriever helps them most, and some questions are answered better with no retrieval at all. Earlier routing methods pick a retriever by semantic relevance alone and treat each retriever's strength as fixed. R3AG instead frames routing as choosing, for each query, one of K candidate retrievers or a null option R0 that skips retrieval. The choice aims to maximize the quality of the final answer. Each retriever is described by two learned embeddings, one for retrieval quality and one for generation utility. Separate encoders produce them, and query-guided multi-head attention merges them. The router then scores the query against the fused representations. Training is contrastive, with positive and negative examples built from two signals: assessments of retrieved documents and whether the generated answer was correct. On TriviaQA, NQ and HotpotQA, the authors report that R3AG beats the best single retriever, static routers and retrieval-necessity methods. The work moves retriever selection toward usefulness for the generator rather than relevance alone.

Key points

  • Setup: The benchmarks are TriviaQA, NQ and HotpotQA. The main generator is LLaMA3-8B-Instruct. The two supervision weights are both set to β = γ = 0.2, which a sensitivity analysis showed works best.
  • Ablations: Replacing the multi-head attention fusion with simple averaging lowers scores on every dataset. Performance also drops when the RQ Encoder is taken out, and likewise when the GU Encoder is removed, which suggests the two signals complement each other.
  • No-retrieval routing: The router chooses R0 for 37.82% of TriviaQA, 15.23% of NQ and 9.52% of HotpotQA queries. On those queries it reaches 76.33, 43.51 and 31.78 EM. Running every query without retrieval gives only 55.34, 22.35 and 19.16 EM.
  • Transfer to another generator: The router was trained with LLaMA3-8B-Instruct and applied to Qwen3-8B without retraining. It reached 40.82 average EM, compared with 41.27 for Oracle-Single-Best and 31.52 for Naive. It scored best on TriviaQA (60.11 EM).
  • Limitations: The capability representations are deliberately simple. The router picks a single retriever and cannot combine several. Evaluation covers question answering only.
