MSEarth: A Multimodal Benchmark for Earth Science Phenomenon Discovery with MLLMs
Paper · 2026 · Xiangyu Zhao, Wanghan Xu, Bo Liu et al.
Summary
Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) are seldom tested on graduate-level Earth science. Existing benchmarks either use synthetic or textbook material, or pair paper figures only with their short captions, which leaves out the reasoning found in the body of the article. MSEarth addresses this gap. The authors collected open-access geoscience publications, extracted their figures, and wrote "refined captions" that combine each original caption with relevant hypotheses, evidence and conclusions from the paper's text. From these captions they generated multiple-choice, open-ended and captioning tasks. Quality was controlled by multi-agent automatic checks and expert review. They also introduced an MLLM-based judge, OE-Eval, which tracks human ratings more closely than overlap metrics. Tests on open and proprietary models show a large gap to human experts. Post-training on the MSEarth training split clearly improves open-source models. The resource gives Earth-science AI a benchmark grounded in evidence, and the semi-automated pipeline could be reused in other scientific fields.
Key points
- Scale of the corpus. 64,560 open-access papers covering five spheres (atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere), eight subjects and 66 sub-subjects. The corpus contains 289,891 figures and about 449K questions.
- Refined captions. Refined captions average 136.29 tokens, compared with 37.56 tokens for the original captions. Tasks are split into MSEarthCap (captioning) and MSEarthQA (MCQ and open-ended).
- OE-Eval validation. Four Earth-science Ph.D. candidates rated 160 samples, with inter-annotator agreement of Krippendorff's α = 0.695. OE-Eval showed higher Spearman correlation with these ratings than BERTScore, ROUGE, METEOR and BLEU.
- Human baseline. MSEarth-Bench-mini contains 300 MCQs. Human experts scored 87.00%, against 53.00% for o4-mini, 51.33% for Gemini-2.5-Pro and 47.33% for InternVL3-78B.
- Effect of post-training. Training on MSEarth data (instruction tuning and GRPO) raised open-ended OE-Eval scores:
- Intern-S1-mini: from 43.69 to 49.74
- Qwen-7B-MSEarth: 48.19, compared with 40.68 for Qwen2.5-VL-7B
