DiscoScore: Evaluating Text Generation with BERT and Discourse Coherence
Summary
BERT-based metrics such as BERTScore and MoverScore mostly measure semantic similarity between hypothesis and reference. They largely ignore discourse coherence, so they cannot reliably reward newer summarization and document-level MT systems that model links between sentences. The authors propose DiscoScore, a parametrized reference-based metric grounded in Centering theory. It applies BERT to readers' "focus" (nouns or semantic entities) in two ways:
- FocusDiff: compares how often foci occur in hypothesis vs. reference, and what they mean.
- SentGraph: builds a sentence graph from shared foci and sentence distance, then compares the two texts' graphs.
The authors benchmark 16 metrics, including discourse metrics and coherence models, on English summarization (e.g., SummEval) and document-level MT data. Most BERT-based metrics, and even BARTScore, correlate poorly with human judgments at the system level. They often trail the decade-old feature-based metrics RC and LC. DiscoScore is the strongest system-level metric for coherence, factual consistency and other aspects. This matters because systems are usually ranked at that level. The authors also tie each variant's performance to how well its discourse features separate hypotheses from references.
Key points
- On average across quality aspects, DiscoScore exceeds BARTScore, RC and LC by more than 10 correlation points. This holds with both single and multiple references.
- On WMT MQM and pSQM ratings, the DS-Sent variant beats BARTScore at system level by 25 and 14 points, respectively.
- DS-Focus outperforms DS-Sent. Nouns as focus generally work better than entities, which help only sometimes, though by a large margin when they do.
- Limitations:
- DiscoScore shows no gains at finer document- or summary-level granularity.
- All experiments use English data only.
- Code is released at github.com/AIPHES/DiscoScore.
