MEVER: Multi-Modal and Explainable Claim Verification with Graph-based Evidence Retrieval
Paper · 2026 · Delvin Ce Zhang, Suhan Cui, Zhelin Chu et al.
Summary
MEVER targets claim verification when the supporting evidence mixes text and images, such as a scientific chart with its caption. It also aims to produce a readable justification for each verdict, which most prior systems either skip or handle for text only. The model has three connected parts:
- Retrieval: a two-layer graph links evidence texts to their images, and attention passes information in both directions (image-to-text and text-to-image).
- Verification: claim and evidence representations are fused at the token level and then hierarchically at the evidence level. The model assigns SUPPORT, REFUTE or NEI.
- Explanation: a multi-modal Fusion-in-Decoder writes the explanation, and a consistency regularizer keeps it aligned with the predicted label.
Existing resources are mostly general-domain, so the authors also release AIChartClaim. It contains claims drawn from AI papers, with chart-plus-caption evidence and explanations. On Mocheg, MR2 and AIChartClaim, MEVER outperforms text-only, multi-modal, chart-specific and instruction-tuned baselines, including GPT-4o, in both gold-evidence and retrieved-evidence settings. The work matters for automated checking of findings stated in scientific figures.
Key points
- Evaluation: benchmarks are Mocheg, MR2 and the new AIChartClaim. Explanations are scored with ROUGE-L, METEOR and BLEU-2, plus further metrics and VLM-as-a-Judge in the appendix.
- AIChartClaim size and chart types: the dataset has 300 charts. Most are line charts (203), followed by bar charts (61). The rest are bar/line charts with printed numbers, combined line + bar, scatterplots, pie charts and heat maps.
- Results by chart type: MEVER does best on line charts (Micro/Macro F1 of 75.6) and worst on rare types such as scatterplots, pie charts and heat maps (about 55.6), which the authors attribute to scarce training data.
- Ablations: every component contributes. Dropping text-to-image reasoning hurts most in retrieval, and dropping evidence-level fusion also lowers accuracy. Removing the Fusion-in-Decoder or the consistency regularizer degrades explanation quality.
- Availability and dataset construction: code and data are available at github.com/cezhang01/mever. CLIP aligns texts and images when their pairing is unknown. GPT-4o, given the gold labels, was used to draft the dataset's explanations.
