BayLing: Bridging Cross-lingual Alignment and Instruction Following through Interactive Translation for Large Language Models
Paper · 2023 · Shaolei Zhang, Qingkai Fang, Zhuocheng Zhang et al.
Summary
Most large language models are trained mainly on English text and English instructions, so they perform worse in other languages. Fixing this usually means gathering large non-English pretraining corpora and writing new instruction sets, both of which are expensive. The authors propose a cheaper route. They fine-tune LLaMA (7B and 13B) on automatically generated multi-turn interactive translation dialogues, where a user repeatedly asks for a translation to be revised. Examples include adding rhyme, fixing the opening words, or shortening the output. These dialogues are mixed with general instruction data. Because the task pairs English with other languages and requires following successive user constraints, it trains cross-lingual alignment and instruction following at the same time. The resulting model, BayLing, gets close to GPT-3.5-turbo despite having only 13B parameters. It is strong in translation and Chinese knowledge tests but weaker in math, coding and reasoning. The work matters because it shows how capabilities learned in English can be moved to other languages with relatively little data. The released code and models make it a practical baseline for low-resource multilingual efforts.
Key points
- Training data: Alpaca (52K single-turn, English), ShareGPT (90K multi-turn, mostly English) and 160K automatically built interactive translation dialogues. The dialogues use English and Chinese as instruction languages and cover English, Chinese, German and French as translation languages.
- Translation results:
- On single-turn benchmarks for Chinese⇔English and English⇔German, BayLing-13B reaches about 95% of GPT-4 by automatic metrics.
- In human evaluation of interactive translation, it reaches about 96% of GPT-3.5-turbo.
- General tasks: The authors built BayLing-80, a multi-turn extension of Vicuna-80. Scored by GPT-4, BayLing reaches about 89% of GPT-3.5-turbo.
- Knowledge tests (AGIEval, zero-shot): BayLing-13B averages 32.13 on Chinese GaoKao and 35.31 on English exams such as SAT, LSAT and GRE, ranking second to GPT-3.5-turbo. It beats Vicuna-13B by about 3 points on average on GaoKao and by about 8 points on the Chinese subject.
- Availability: BayLing-7B, BayLing-13B, the code (github.com/ictnlp/BayLing) and a demo are publicly released.
