SweetieChat: A Strategy-Enhanced Role-playing Framework for Diverse Scenarios Handling Emotional Support Agent
Paper · 2025 · Jing Ye, Lu Xiang, Yaping Zhang et al.
Summary
General-purpose LLMs used as emotional supporters often reply with long, template-like answers that pair sympathy with advice. Existing emotional support conversation (ESC) data is either small (ESConv) or, when expanded with LLMs, repetitive and weak in strategy use. The authors address this with a role-playing pipeline built on GPT-4o and three simulated agents. A Seeker has a generated persona and scenario. A Strategy Counselor picks a psychologically grounded support strategy for each turn. A Supporter writes the reply guided by that strategy. Seeker diversity comes from an expanded set of problem types, scenarios grown from curated seeds, and profiles grown from a seed pool. The result is the ServeForEmo corpus. Fine-tuning LLaMA on it yields SweetieChat, an agent meant to handle open-domain emotional support. On the ESConv test set, both automatic metrics and pairwise human judgments favour the ServeForEmo-trained model over ones trained on ESConv, AUGESC and ExTES, even though some of those datasets are larger. This suggests that varied, strategy-driven data matters more than sheer volume.
Key points
- ServeForEmo contains over 3.7K multi-turn dialogues and 62.8K utterances, about three times the size of ESConv (1.3K dialogues, 13 topics).
- ESConv's problem categories were broadened to 45 types in five groups, such as interpersonal relationships and life/work stress. Generation was seeded with 1,000 curated (problem, scenario, dialogue) triplets and 100 hand-written seeker profiles.
- Automatic evaluation (Distinct-n, BERT-Score and others, averaged over three runs) and human A/B comparison on 50 sampled dialogues both favour the ServeForEmo-trained model. Inter-annotator agreement measured by Fleiss' Kappa falls between 0.4 and 0.8.
- In a live test, 10 volunteers rated the ServeForEmo and ExTES models on a 1–5 Likert scale. ServeForEmo came out slightly ahead, but both models were weak on Suggestion, Helpfulness and Informativeness.
- Stated limitations:
- simulated supporters sometimes ignore their assigned strategy;
- seekers sometimes drift from their personas;
- ESC quality remains hard to evaluate.
