From Persona to Personalization: A Survey on Role-Playing Language Agents

Summary

This survey organizes the fast-growing research on Role-Playing Language Agents (RPLAs), which are LLM-based systems that take on an assigned persona. It also links that research to commercial products. The authors are mostly from Fudan University. They argue that emerged LLM abilities make convincing role-play feasible: in-context learning, instruction following, step-by-step reasoning and social intelligence. Their main contribution is a taxonomy of three progressively more personalized persona types:

  • demographic groups, which rely on stereotypes the model absorbed statistically;
  • well-known characters, both real and fictional;
  • individualized profiles that evolve from a specific user's data.

For each type, the survey reviews where the data comes from, how agents are built and how they are evaluated. It then covers risks such as toxicity, bias, misuse and over-anthropomorphism. Next it discusses limitations, including long-context handling and knowledge gaps, and outlines future work. An appendix reviews RPLA products on the market. The work matters as a structured map of a fragmented field, applications ranging from companions and games to copilots and digital clones.

Key points

  • The three persona types are Demographic Persona (e.g., occupations, Gen Z, introverts/ENFJ), Character Persona (e.g., Napoleon, Batman, Elon Musk) and Individualized Persona (e.g., travel or shopping copilots built from behavior history).
  • The types can be layered in one agent. For example, a Socrates-style philosophy tutor combines a demographic role (ancient Greek philosopher), a character (Socrates) and a user-adapted profile.
  • Risks discussed include toxicity, bias and misuse. The authors also warn that over-reliance on RPLAs may lead to social isolation and to manipulation of public opinion by agents that conceal they are AI.
  • The authors propose four future directions: causal data analysis for decisions, better-than-imitation decision-making, RPLAs as personal assistants, and autonomous social simulation.
  • The paper is arXiv:2404.18231 (v2, Oct 2024) and was reviewed on OpenReview. Appendix A covers RPLA products currently on the market.
