Recitation over Reasoning: How Cutting-Edge Language Models Can Fail on Elementary School-Level Reasoning Problems?
Paper · 2025 · Kai Yan, Yufei Xu, Zhengyin Du et al.
Summary
The paper asks whether frontier LLMs actually reason through simple problems or mostly reproduce memorized solution templates. To test this, the authors built RoR-Bench, a human-curated, multimodal Chinese benchmark. Each item pairs a classic, mostly elementary-level puzzle with a near-identical variant in which one small but decisive condition is changed. The change requires an entirely different solution and yields a different answer. Seventeen native-speaker annotators gathered the originals from brain-teaser blogs and children's puzzle collections. They then wrote unambiguous variants, and simple number swaps were not allowed. When evaluated on these pairs, every tested model, including OpenAI-o1 and DeepSeek-R1, scored dramatically lower on the variants, often by around 60%. Models did especially poorly when a variant had no valid solution. Prompting the model to read carefully and adding a one-shot example helped somewhat but did not close the gap. The authors attribute the failures mainly to overfitting on familiar solution paradigms, with over-alignment as a secondary factor. The results suggest that strong benchmark scores may overstate genuine reasoning ability.
Key points
- RoR-Bench has 158 text problem pairs and 57 image problem pairs. Each pair is an original problem and a subtly modified one. The benchmark is Chinese-only, which the authors list as a limitation.
- Top models, including OpenAI-o1 and DeepSeek-R1, lose roughly 60% accuracy on the modified problems. VLMs show the same recitation behavior on the image items.
- On unsolvable variants, scores without fixes are very low. For example, DeepSeek-R1 recognizes fewer than 10% of these cases as unsolvable.
- Combining a "force correct" prompt with a one-shot example raises no-solution scores by about 27 points on average. GPT-4.5-Preview reaches 58.13, while DeepSeek-R1 stays at 11.25.
- Prepending irrelevant text (the Thousand Character Classic) caused no consistent change in accuracy, so the authors rule out dispersed attention. They identify solution-paradigm overfitting as the main cause.
