Yi-Lightning Technical Report

Summary
This report from 01.AI describes Yi-Lightning, a proprietary flagship LLM designed to perform well in real use while keeping training, deployment and inference costs low. The model uses a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) design. Each expert's FFN is split into smaller units, and the team added a layered load-balancing scheme that balances tokens per expert, per Expert Parallel group and per partition. Attention mixes sliding-window and full layers and reuses KV cache across layers.
Training ran in multiple stages: pre-training on multilingual web text, books, papers, code and QA pairs, then SFT with synthetic data for hard math and coding tasks, then RLHF with reward modeling and DPO. A safety framework called RAISE covers the full lifecycle.
On Chatbot Arena, Yi-Lightning debuted in 6th place overall. On static academic benchmarks it was competitive but less dominant. The authors argue that this gap between benchmark scores and human preference means conventional benchmarks need to be reassessed as development guides.
Key points
-
Chatbot Arena (October 16, 2024): 6th overall with an Arena score of 1287, tied with Grok-2-08-13 and just ahead of GPT-4o-0513 (1285).
- 2nd in Chinese.
- 3rd in Multi-Turn and Math.
- Ranked fourth in each of the Longer Query, Hard Prompts and Coding categories.
-
Load balancing: a new partitioned EP load balancing loss (PEP) is combined with Switch-Transformer and EP-group losses. The weights are α_PEP = 10⁻³, α_EP = 10⁻⁴ and α_ST = 10⁻⁶.
-
KV cache reduction: each hybrid block has three sliding-window attention layers plus one full-attention layer. Consecutive full-attention layers share their KV cache. Together these cut memory use by up to 82.8%.
-
Academic benchmarks (local deployment):
Benchmark Score GPQA 50.9 MATH 76.4 HumanEval 83.5 IFEval 81.9 Arena-Hard 91.8 MT-Bench 8.75 These results were compared against Qwen2.5-72B, DeepSeek-V2.5, Llama3.1-405B, GPT-4o and Claude-3.5-Sonnet.
-
RAISE (Responsible AI Safety Engine): a four-component safety framework spanning pre-training, post-training and serving, including real-time output safety control. The model is available through the 01.AI developer platform.
