PolyLM: An Open Source Polyglot Large Language Model
Paper · 2023 · Xiangpeng Wei, Haoran Wei, Huan Lin et al.
Summary
Most open LLMs are trained mainly on English, so they handle many widely spoken languages poorly. Open multilingual instruction data and a shared multilingual evaluation suite are also missing. Researchers at Alibaba's DAMO Academy tackle all three gaps. They pre-train PolyLM from scratch in two sizes, 1.7B and 13B parameters, on about 640B tokens covering 18 major languages. The data comes mostly from mC4, CC-100 and The Pile, plus code and OPUS parallel text. Two design choices target multilingual strength. Bilingual data is mixed into pre-training. A curriculum also raises the non-English share from 30% early on to 60% by the last stage. For fine-tuning, the authors build MultiAlpaca with a multilingual self-instruct pipeline that translates seeds, generates instructions and filters them. They also assemble an evaluation benchmark from existing tasks. PolyLM outperforms similarly sized open models such as LLaMA and BLOOM on non-English tasks while staying roughly on par in English. The models, instruction data and benchmark are released publicly, giving a stronger base for languages that English-centric LLMs underserve.
Key points
- Pre-training corpus composition (Table 1, 638B tokens total): mC4 321.7B (49.95%), CC-100 208.1B (32.31%), The Pile 105.7B (16.41%), GitHub 7.5B (1.17%), OPUS parallel data 1.0B (0.16%).
- English makes up about 68% of the data, with Chinese next at about 22%. Korean is the smallest language at 0.13%.
- MultiAlpaca contains 132,701 instruction samples generated automatically from 175 English seed tasks. The authors chose this over machine-translated sets like xP3-MT to avoid translationese.
- The evaluation benchmark spans 10 tasks in 15 languages, covering QA, understanding, generation and WMT20 translation.
- On WMT20, PolyLM-MultiAlpaca-13B reaches an average BLEU of 26.32 for X→En and 20.5 for En→X. LLaMA-Alpaca-13B scores 19.14 and 8.5 on the same directions. Models are hosted on ModelScope.
