NovelQA: Benchmarking Question Answering on Documents Exceeding 200K Tokens
Paper · 2024 · Cunxiang Wang, Ruoxi Ning, Boqi Pan et al.
Summary
Current LLMs accept context windows of 200K+ tokens, but long-context benchmarks typically average around 60K tokens. NovelQA addresses this mismatch with a question-answering benchmark built from complete English novels, averaging more than 200K tokens per input. Expert annotators with English Literature backgrounds wrote every question, reference answer and supporting evidence by hand. Each item can be posed as a four-option multiple-choice task or as an open generative task, and questions are labeled by complexity and by narrative aspect. The authors evaluated commercial and open-source long-context models. Even the strongest system answered only about three in five generative questions correctly. Models had the most trouble with multi-hop reasoning, fine-grained details, counting, and evidence located past the 100K-token mark. This last finding differs from the familiar lost-in-the-middle pattern. The benchmark gives the community a demanding, human-curated way to measure genuine comprehension of book-length texts.
Key points
- Corpus: 89 novels, of which 65 are public-domain Project Gutenberg books and 24 are purchased copyrighted titles. Every book exceeds 50K words.
- Question breakdown: 2,305 questions in total, split into 807 multi-hop, 986 single-hop and 512 detail questions. Aspect labels include Times, Meaning, Span, Setting, Relation, Character and Plot.
- Generative results: Claude-3.5 reached 62.30% accuracy and Llama-3.1 reached 51.50%. Some models with nominally longer windows failed on inputs above 100K tokens.
- Error analysis: the main error types were hallucination, overlooking details, and miscounting. Multiple-choice accuracy on counting questions stayed between roughly 38% and 50%.
- Availability: the dataset is on Hugging Face (NovelQA/NovelQA) under Apache-2.0, though only public-domain texts are shared. A Codabench evaluation server and leaderboard are also provided.
